Taxonomic studies on the Indian smuts were starded a century ago when Sir Joseph D. Hooker collected a few species in Assam and Sikkim. Four of these were described as new by M. J. Berkeley in 1851-4. Other collections in the nineteenth century were made by D.D. Cunningham, A. Barclay, J.S. Gamble, J.F. Duthie, and others and indentified by Brefeld, Cooke, Hennings, Ricker, and Ellis and Everhart. By the end of that century twenty smuts had been named of which the smut on species of Nymphoea was studied by Cunningham himself. He established the genus Rhamphospora for its reeception and named the smut Rhamphospora nymphoeae. That genus has now been merged into the synonymy of Entyloma established a few years earlier by de Bary.
