YALE University Press, 1990/09/10 - 192 ページ
In the first complete account of the Druze, Robert Brenton Betts provides a general survey of the history, traditions, and society of this secretive Arab sect. Betts, who has spent a great deal of time with the Druze, interweaves his firsthand observations with a wealth of primary and secondary sources, describing not only their thousand-year history but also their political significance in today's Middle East. "A deeply informed, brightly written account of the Druze that will be read with profit by students of Middle East history, politics, religion, and anthropology as well as by everyone with an interest in Lebanon, Syria, and Israel."-Michael C. Hudson, Georgetown University "A broad and exotic historical view."-Jewish Chronicle

著者について (1990)

Professor ROBERT BRENTON BETTS took his undergraduate degree from The College of William and Mary in Virginia and his M.A. & Ph.D degrees from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in International Relations and Middle East Studies. His professional career began with a research position at the Library of Congress, followed by a posting to Kuwait as a foreign service officer with the Department of State. University appointments in Greece and the Middle East followed, along with the resident directorship of the American Research Center in Egypt (Cairo, 1986-1990), and since 1992 eight years as associate professor at the American University of Beirut and another eight as full professor at the University of Balamand, the largest institution of higher learning in northern Lebanon, founded by the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch in 1988. He is one of the world's leading authority on religious minorities in the Middle East. His two previous books, Christians in the Arab East-a Political Study (Atlanta, John Knox Press and London, SPCK, 1979) and The Druze (Yale University Press, 1988) have been widely acclaimed and frequently cited. In addition to his academic activities he has pursued a parallel career in music, serving as organist-choirmaster at Anglican churches in the region, notably All Saints Episcopal Cathedral, Cairo, and the American University of Beirut. His life-long passion for Renaissance vocal polyphony led to his early support for the Tallis Scholars and its Director, Peter Phillips, which contributed to the establishment of their own, highly-successful recording company, Gimell, in the early 1980's. He retired from the University of Balamand in 2008 and now lives in Athens.
