Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V. MISCELLANEOUS HINTS RESPECTING THE GOVERNMENT OF CHILDREN. Whoever undertakes to govern, must meet with difficulties in any relation whatever. Let no one suppose, then, that he will find, or be able to make, all things exactly to his own mind. Much, indeed, may be done, --although complete uniformity cannot be realized in any government on earth. It is what God requires, only, that we should attempt. He defines our duties as imperfect and erring creatures, and never assigns us an oppressive and impracticable task. His requirements, in all cases, have respect to the ability which he supplies; so that, if each will do his best in his providential lot, he may consistently and safely confide in God for the result. There are duties which are more obligatory upon some persons than they are upon others, on account of a difference in talent, leisure, opportunity, wealth, or learning; but the duty of family government is common to the parental relation, irrespective of any extraordinary qualifications, and coeval with it. Considering its momentous results, scarcely any other duty can vie in importance with it, --and the difficulties attending a thorough performance of it, will bear some proportion to its importance. Yet there is no difficulty too great to be overcome, and no rational effort which the case will not justify. If parents themselves will but observe a few plain rules, they will be able with comparative ease to rule their children. Self-government is one of the great secrete of family-government. " He that ruleth his spirit is greater than he that taketh a city;" whilst he that does not, declares himself inferior to his dependents.
