In April 1849, Johnston was in a party lead by Jim Stewart that left Independence, Missouri, and arrived at the end of July in Sacramento, California, the first wagon train. Johnson worked in the mines and gave early descriptions of Sacramento and San Francisco. In December he returned by sea and Panama to Pittsburgh.
