Ventanilla: Duet

Lawrence Lacambra Ypil is a poet and essayist from Cebu. Hislatest book, The Experiment of the Tropics, where he revisits earlytwentieth century photographs of the Philippines during theAmerican occupation was a finalist at the Lambda awards andwas on the longlist for the Believer book awards. He earned anMFA in Poetry from Washington University in St. Louis andan MFA in Nonfiction Writing from the University of Iowa.He teaches creative writing at Yale-NUS College. Martin Dusinberre is a professor and the chair for global history atthe University of Zurich. Before attaining this position in 2015, hewas a lecturer in Modern Japanese History at Newcastle Universityand a postdoctoral researcher at Heidelberg University. Next to hisacademic publications, which focus on the social history of modernJapan and the history of shipping and sea travel, he has writteneditorial pieces for Reuters, the History Workshop, and TheGuardian. In 2018 he developed an exhibition in cooperationwith the Johann Jacobs Museum in Zurich: A Painting for theEmperor. Japanese Labourers on Sugar Plantations in Hawai'icentered on a painting by Joseph Dwight Strong and dealt with hiscurrent research about the Japanese in Hawaii.
