ÉCOLE FRANÇAISE. JOS. VERNET. **** MUS. FRANÇAIS. PORT DE MARSEILLE. La ville de Marseille fut fondée, à ce que l'on croit, environ 600 ans avant Jésus-Christ, par une colonie de Phocéens. Une Académie célèbre la rendit long-temps l'émule d'Athènes. Strabou la comparaît à Rhodes et à Carthage pour la beauté de ses édifices, dont il ne reste plus aucun vestige. Après être restée sous la domination romaine, Clotaire s'empara de Marseille en 473. Cette ville passa ensuite sous la souveraineté des comtes de Provence, devint république en 1214, et fut de nouveau réunie à la France, en 1482. Le port de Marseille est un chef-d'œuvre d'une grande beauté; il peut contenir au moins six à sept cents navires, mais les vaisseaux de haut bord ne peuvent y entrer. Son commerce est très-étendu, surtout avec le Levant. Parmi les personnages célèbres nés à Marseille, on doit citer Honoré d'Urfé, auteur du roman d'Astrée; le prédicateur Mascaron, le sculpteur Pierre Puget, le généalogiste d'Hozier, le naturaliste Charles Plumier, le grammairien Dumarsais, et les Mirabaud. Joseph Vernet, pour faire ce tableau, s'est placé en face de l'entrée du port; a gauche est un fort qui en défend l'approche; dans le fond, à droite, est un autre fort qui domine les environs. Sur le bord de la mer, est un groupe de personnes occupées à voir manœuvrer les bâtimens qui arrivent. Tout-àfait sur le devant est assis le peintre, à qui une dame fait remarquer le centenaire, connu sous le nom d'Annibal. L'artiste paraît avoir choisi l'heure de midi dans un beau jour d'été; le ton du ciel est frais et léger. Ce tableau, peint en 1754, est maintenant dans la Galerie du Louvre. A celebrated Academy long rendered it the rival of Athens. Strabo compared it to Rhodes, and Carthage, for the beauty of its edifices, of which no vestige remains. After remaining under the Roman dominion, Clotaire seized upon Marseilles in 473. This City afterwards passed under the sovereignty of the Counts of Provence, it became a Republic in 1214 and was again reunited to France in 1482. The port of Marseilles is a masterpiece of great beauty, capable of containing at least six or seven hundred vessels, those however of larges dimensions, are not able to enter, its commerce is very extensive, especially with the Levant. Amongst the celebrated personnages born at Marseilles, we ought to notice Honoré d'Urfé (the author of the romance called « Astrea ; ») the preacher Mascaron, the sculptor Peter Puget, the genealogist d'Hosier, the naturalist Charles Plumier, the grammarian Dumarsais, and Mirabeau . In painting this subject, Joseph Vernet placed himself opposite the entrance of the port, on the left is seen a fort which defends the approach to it, and in the background on the right, is another which commands the environs. On the sea-shore, is a group of persons occupied in observing the manoeuvring of the ships which are arriving. Immediately in front is seated the artist, to whom a lady points out the vessel known by the name of the Annibal. Vernet appears to have chosen the hour of mid-day, on a fine summer's day, the style of the sky is fresh and light. This picture painted in 1754 is now in the gallery of the Louvre.
