LES JOUEURS DE DAMES.

Le jeu de dames est répandu également, en tous pays et dans toutes les classes de la société. Le peintre nous fait voir ici deux voisins qui prennent, cette distraction au devant de leur maison, probablement après leur diner. Celui qui vient de gagner la partie exprime sa joie de la manière la plus expansive; c'est sans contredit le maître de la maison, puisqu'il a fait à son hôte l'honneur de la chaise, tandis qu'il est assis sur un banc ; d'ailleurs, le chien est placé près de lui, et cela démontre avec quel soin l'auteur du tableau est observateur de la nature.

L'adversaire paraît fortement alléré du coup inattendu qui lui fait perdre la partie. La ménagère, qui tient un enfant dans ses bras, regarde le jeu avec attention, et l'expression de sa figure fait voir qu'elle porte intérêt au joueur qui a gagné. Elle tient à sa main un pot qu'elle va emplir de bière, afin de distraire un peu les deux joueurs de l'objet qui les occupe si diversement.

La composition de ce tableau est simple, le dessin en est correct, les expressions variées, et le clair-obscur très-vigoureux. Le peintre Burnet l'a gravé lui-même en melzotinte.

DRAUGHT PLAYERS.

Draught-playing is greatly in use in every class of the society. The painter offers to view two neighbours diverting themselves at this play before their house, very likely after their dinner. He who has just won the game, expresses his joy in a most jovial manner and doubtless is the master of the house, having yielded to his guest the honour of the chair, he himself being seated on a bench; besides, a dog is placed near him, which denotes what a careful observer of nature the painter is.

The opponent seems to be quite thunderstruck at the unexpected push which makes him lose the game. The housewife holding a child in her arms beholds the game with great altention, the expression of her countenance shows how much concern she has for the player who has won. In her hand is a pot, which she is going to fill with beer, on purpose to divert a little the players from an object they seem to be so intent upon.

The composition of this picture is simple, the drawing correct, there is a variety of expression in it, and the clear-darkness is also extremely vigorous. Burnet the painter has engraven it himself in mezzo tinto.

JUPITER ET ANTIOPE.

Jupiter, dont les métamorphoses ont été si fréquentes et si variées pour séduire différentes mortelles, prit la forme d'un satyre afin de plaire à la belle Antiope, fille de Nyctéus et de Polyxe. On doit donc par là comprendre que c'est un usage ridicule de donner, comme on le fait si souvent, un caractère brut à ces êtres imaginaires. Aussi Titien, dans sa composition, a laissé au satyre une physionomie agréable et pleine de tendresse. Il a seulement donné un peu d'allongement aux oreilles; et, en couvrant de poils la partie inférieure du corps, il a laissé aux jambes la forme humaine. Le corps du satyre est d'une couleur vigoureuse, ce qui fait ressortir davantage la blancheur éclatante de la belle Antiope.

Le fond de ce tableau est un paysage d'un ton chaud, les arbres par lesquels le groupe est abrité procurent un très bon effet de lumière.

JUPITER AND ANTIOPE.

Jupiter whose metamorphoses were so frequent, and so various in order to seduce mortals, took the form of a Satyr, to render himself agreeable to the beautiful Antiope. That is intended to inform us that the custom is ridiculous of giving a character of brutes, to these imaginary beings.

Titian, in his composition has bestowed an agreeable countenance on Jupifer, and one full of tenderness. He has merely lengthened the ears a little, and covering with hair the lower part of the body, has distinguished the legs by those of the human form. The body of the Satyr, is of a vigorous colour, which heightens still more the dazzling whiteness of the beautiful Antiope.

The back ground of this picture is of a warm tone, and the trees by which the group is shaded, have a good effect.
