UNITY.

THE GREAT CONSUMMATION OF THE CHRISTIAN SCHEME.

IN TYPE AND TEACHING.

Gen. ii. 8, 9, 10.-And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there He put the man whom He had formed.

And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

And a river went out of Eden to water the garden. [The garden planted by the Lord God, was the place of man's highest privileges. Driven forth from thence by reason of the Fall, he became an outcast and alien from God, for in no other place was the tree of life and the river of God. Hence the garden of Eden has ever been considered as a type of the Church, in which man's highest privilege, his communion with God is vouchsafed]

Gen. viii. 1.-And the Lord said unto Noah, come

thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.

7.-And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

[The ark was also a type of the one Church, wherein all that were saved took refuge; and which carried them from the old to the new world. See also Heb. xi. 7. 1 Peter iii. 20.]

Ex. xxv. 8.-And let them make Me a Sanctuary that I may dwell among them.

[The Tabernacle and the Temple were likewise figures of the one true Church of Christ, wherein God was to be approached through His ordinances. In this was the one High Priest-type of Him Who fills the Tabernacle-the one Altar, the one Sacrifice, the one Service, unto which all the people of God were gathered in one holy communion. The Church is everywhere represented as one, throughout the Scripture. It is a kingdom where the rebellious are to be destroyed; a household, in which the unjust are to be punished; a vineyard in which the labourer receives his hire; a field, whence the wicked are to be plucked out; a fold, where the wanderer is to be restrained; a net out of which the unworthy are to be cast; a vine, from which the unfruitful are to be cut off; a trust, by which the servant is to be tried, and the unprofitable cast into outer darkness.]

Matt. xvi. 18. And I say unto thee, That thou

art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

19.—And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: And whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth, shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

St. John x. 16.-And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold; them also I must bring; and there must be one fold, and one shepherd.

St. John xi. 52.-That also He should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

John xvii. 11.-Holy Father keep through Thy Own Name, those whom Thou hast given Me, that they may be one as We are.

20. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word.

21. That they may all be one; as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in Us; that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.

22.—And the glory which Thou gavest Me I have given them; that they may be one, even as We are One:

23.-I in them, and Thou in Me, that they may be made perfect in one.

Acts ii. 44, 47.-And all that believed were together, and had all things in common ;-And they, continuing daily with one accord in the Temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their

meat with gladness and singleness of heart,—and the Lord added to the Church daily such as should be saved.

Acts xv. 3.-And being brought on their way by the Church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles; and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.

15. And to this agree the words of the Prophets; as it is written,

16.—After this I will return, and will build again the Tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins of it, and will set it up.

17. That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom My Name is called, saith the Lord, Who doeth all these things.

Acts xx. 28-30.-Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the Church of God, which He hath purchased with His Own Blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

Rom. xii. 4, 5.—For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office; so we, being many, are one Body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

د

Rom. xv. 6.—That ye may with one mind and one

mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Cor. i. 10.-Now I beseech you, brethren, by the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

11.-For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, that there are contentions among you. 12. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

13.-Is Christ divided?

1 Cor. x. 17.-For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

1 Cor. xii. 12.-For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.

13.-For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one spirit.

1 Cor. xii. 25.-That there should be no schism or division in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

Gal. iii. 28.-Ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Eph. i. 22.—And hath put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be the Head over all things to the Church,
