THE view from it is a calm tranquil fcene of water, gliding through floping ground, with a sketch through the trees of the fmall pond below.

THE scene in this place is that of water stealing along through a rude fequeftered vale, the ground on each fide covered with weeds and fieldflowers, as that before is kept close-fhaven. Farther on we lose all fight of water, and only hear the noise, without having the appearance; a kind of effect which the Chinese are fond of producing in what they call their scenes of enchantment, We now turn all on a fudden upon the high cascade which we admired before in vifta. The fcene around is quite a grotto of native ftone running up it, roots of trees over-hanging it, and the whole fhaded over head. However, we first approach upon the left a chalybeat spring, with an iron bowl chained to it, and this infcription upon a stone,

FONS FERRVGINEVS

DIVAE QUAE SECESSV ISTO FRVI CONCEDIŤ.

Then turning to the right, we find a stone feat making part of the aforefaid cave, with this well-applied infcription,

Intus

INTVS AQVAE DVLCIS, VIVOQVE SEDILIA SAXO; NYMPHARVM DOMVS.

Which I have often heard Mr. Shenstone term the definition of a grotto. We now wind up a fhady path on the left hand, and croffing the head of this cascade, pass beside the river that fupplies it, in our way up to the house. One feat firft occurs under a fhady oak as we afcend the hill; foon after, we enter the fhrubbery which half furrounds the house, where we find two feats thus infcribed, to two of his moft particular friends. The first thus,

AMICITIAE ET MERITIS

RICHARDI GRAVES:

IPSAE TE, TITYRE, PINVS,

IPSI TE FONTES, IPSA HAEC ARBVSTA VOCABANT.

And a little further the other, with the following infcription,

AMICITIAE ET MERITIS

RICHARDI JAGO,

From this laft is an opening down the valley over a large fliding lawn, well edged with oaks, to a piece of water croffed by a confiderable

bridge

bridge in the flat-the steeple of Hales, a village amid trees, making on the whole a very pleafing picture. Thus winding through flowering fhrubs, befide a menagerie for doves, we are conducted to the ftables. But let it not be forgot, that on the entrance into this fhrubbery, the first object that strikes us is a Venus de Medicis, befide a bafon of gold fish, encompaffed round with fhrubs, and illustrated with the following infcription,

Not her on Paphian plains admir'd
The bold, the pert, the gay.

Not her, whofe amorous leer prevail'd
To bribe the Phrygian boy;

While half withdrawn fhe feems to hide,
And half reveals, her charms.

And while the fight unveils a part,
