The convention between the United States and China for the regulation of trade, signed at Shanghai on the 8th day of November, 1858, was read the first time.

On motion by Mr. Mason,

Ordered, That the said convention, together with the message of the President and the accompanying documents, be referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations.

The convention between the United States and China for the adjustment of claims, signed at Shanghai on the 8th day of November, 1858, was read the first time.

On motion by Mr. Mason,

Ordered, That the said convention, together with the message of the President and the accompanying documents, be referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations.

Ordered, That the nominations of John J. Hoffman, Joseph C. Bowen, William P. Aukeny, Hackaliah B. Strang, John V. Lovely, Charles Cornwall, Robert T. Mr. Stuart, from the Committee on Public Lands, to whom were referred, February 16th, the nominations of Samuel B. Garrett, Henry L. Brown, and Stephen J. Dallas, reported.

Whereupon

Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of the said persons, agreeably to their nominations respectively.

Mr. Sebastian, from the Committee on Indian Affairs, to whom were referred, Feb'y 8th, the nominations of Robert S. Neighbours, S. P. Ross, and Mathew Leeper, reported.

Whereupon

Resolved, That the Senate advise and consent to the appointment of the said persons, agreeably to their nominations respectively.

Mr. Mason, from the Committee on Foreign Relations, to whom was referred, this day, the convention between the United States and China for the adjustment of claims, signed at Shanghai, on the 8th day of Noyember, 1858, reported it without amendment.

The said convention was read the second time and considered as in Committee of the Whole; and no amendment being made, it was reported to the Senate.

Mr. Mason submitted the following resolution for consideration:

Resolved (two-thirds of the Senators present concurring), That the Senate advise and consent to the ratification of the convention between the United States and China for the adjustment of claims, signed at Shanghai, on the 8th day of November, 1858.

The Senate, by unanimous consent, proceeded to consider the said resolution, and it was unanimously agreed to.

Mr. Mason, from the Committee on Foreign Relations, to whom was referred, this day, the convention between the United States and China for the regulation of trade, signed at Shanghai, on the 8th day of November, 1858, reported it without amendment.

The said convention was read the second time, and considered as in Committee of the Whole; and no amendment being made, it was reported to the Senate.

Mr. Mason submitted the following resolution for consideration :

Resolved (two-thirds of the Senators present concurring), That the Senate advise and consent to the ratification of the convention between the United States and China for the regulation of trade, signed at Shanghai, on the 8th day of November, 1858, reported.
