Mais il ne lui répondit pas, et ses disciples le prièrent, en lui disant : Renvoyez-la, car elle crie après nous. Il leur répondit: Je ne suis envoyé qu'aux brebis perdues de la maison d'Israël. Mais elle s'approcha et l'adora, en disant : Seigneur, ayez pitié de moi. Il lui répondit : Il n'est pas juste de prendre le pain des enfans et de le jeter aux chiens. Il est vrai, dit-elle, Seigneur, mais les petits chiens mangent les miettes qui tombent de la table de leurs maîtres. Alors Jésus lui répondit : O femme, votre foi est grande! qu'il vous soit fait selon votre désir. Et à l'heure même sa fille fut guérie.» Sous le nom de Cananéenne, l'Évangile entend parler d'une femme qui, descendant des anciens habitans de Canaan, était encore païenne; c'est pourquoi Jésus-Christ semble d'abord la repousser comme ne suivant pas la loi de Moïse. Déjà Vien avait quitté les traces de l'école de Boucher et dé Vanloo pour ramener les beaux-arts à de meilleurs principes; David, revenant de Rome, avait exécuté des travaux remar quables par la correction du dessin. Alors un jeune homme de vingt-un ans, élève de ce grand peintre, fils et petit-fils de deux peintres renommés pour les portraits, Germain-Jean Drouais, se fit remarquer de la manière la plus extraordinaire au concours des grands prix de peinture en 1784. Quand ce tableau parut, l'admiration fut universelle. Ce triomphe ne laissa bientôt que de cruels souvenirs! When Christ left Genesareth to proceed to Tyr, a canaanite woman came to him saying : « Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David, my daughter is grievously vexed with a demon; but he answered her not, and his disciples besought him saying, send her away for she crieth after us. He answered: I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshipped him, saying: Lord, help me. He answered: It is not meet to take the childrens' bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said: Truth, Lord, yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from the masters' table. Then Jesus replied: O woman, great is thy faith; be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. Under the name of Canaanite, the Evangelist means a woman who, descended from the ancient inhabitants of Canaan, was still a pagan, which is the reason that Christ at first seems to repulse her, as not following the law of Moses. Vien had already quitted the track of Boucher's and Vanloo's school, to bring back the arts to the best principles. David, returning from Rome, had executed works remarkable for the correctness of the design; when a young man of twentyone years, pupil of this great artist, son and grandson of two distinguished portrait-painters, Germain-Jean Drouais, excited the most extraordinary notice at the meeting for the grand prizes in painting, 1784. When this picture appeared, the admiration was universal. This triumph, alas! soon after left but painful reminescences! Drouais went to Rome : he had scarcely time to achieve two other pictures, when he was withdrawn for ever from his mother, his country, and the arts.
