SAINT ANTOINE.

Haut., 8 pieds 6 pouces; larg., 6 pieds 8 pouces.

SAINT ANTHONY.

We have already had occasion to speak, at no 93, of saint Anthony, and of the temptations which he withstood. In this picture he is walking clothed in white, and accompanied by a black pig, which is called his companion, because indeed it is the only animal that can be brought up by a monk continually occupied in prayer.

The christian religion spreading over Egypt changed the manner of thinking relative to the dead, and the custom of embalming was discontinued without the inconveniences which might result from it being thought of; but the heat of the climate decomposing the bodies immediately, even during the ceremonies of sepulture, the funeral assistants felt severely the terrible influence of the putrid vapours, which neither the abundance nor strength of the perfumes could neutralize. The plague, a disease before unknown, appeared in many cities, and returning almost yearly caused every where a depopulation, so that the country soon presented the appearance of a desert, instead of that ancient Egypt, whose splendour recorded by historians is about to be better known to us, by the important discoveries, and the numerous researches of the learned M. Champollion, junior.

This picture, which has never been engraved, is in the dining-room of marshal Soult, duke of Dalmatia. Upon the stone to the left is perceived the signature of Franco di Zurbaran facie 1636.
