SAINT PAUL PRÊCHANT.

Tandis que saint Pierre prêchait pour convertir les Juifs, saint Paul qui avait reçu de Dieu la connaissance de l'Évangile, devint l'apôtre des Gentils : il parcourut diverses contrées pour amener les païens à la foi de Jésus-Christ. Ayant plus d'instruction qu'aucun des autres apôtres, ses discours faisaient d'autant plus d'impression qu'il avait l'esprit vif et insinuant, parlait avec facilité, avec éloquence, et avec une autorité à laquelle il était difficile de ne pas céder.

Il avait déjà été à Antioche, à Athènes, à Corinthe, et t partout il avait opéré des conversions: arrivé à Éphèse, un miracle effraya tellement les habitans de cette ville que « ceux qui avaient cru venaient confesser et déclarer ce qu'ils avaient fait. Plusieurs de ceux qui s'étaient occupés des sciences curieuses (l'astrologie et la magie).apportèrent leurs livres, les brûlèrent devant tout le monde; et le prix en étant supputé, il se trouva monter à cinquante mille deniers. Ainsi la parole de Dieu s'étendait et se fortifiait.

Le Sueur peignit ce tableau à l'âge de 32 ans ; il s'y montra sublime par · la pensée. Quelle inspiration! que de force et de majesté dans la figure de saint Paul! la confiance et la soumission se font voir dans ceux qui l'entourent! Combien sont nobles toutes les attitudes de ses personnages! comme les expressions sont justes! quel style dans les draperies! S'il restait quelque incertitude sur le sujet du tableau, on serait bientôt reporté sur le lieu de la scène en voyant le grand temple du fond et la statue de Diane qui décore l'une des niches du péristyle. Ce tableau a été gravé par Étienne Picart et M, R.-U. Massard. Haut., 11 pieds 10 pouces ; larg., 10 pieds.

SAINT PAUL PREACHING.

While saint Peter preached to convert the Jews, saint Paul who had received from God the knowledge of the Gospel, bccame the apostle of the Gentiles; he traversed divers countries to convert the pagans to the christian faith. Being more learned than any of the other apostles, his sermons were still more impressive from his quick and persuasive talent, his facility in speaking, and that authorative style of eloquence and manner which was almost irresistible.

He had already been at Athens, and at Corinth, and had every where made converts. Arrived at Ephesus, a miracle he wrought there inspired the inhabitants of that city with such fear that those who believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Many of them also who used curious arts (astrology and magic) brought their books together, and burned them before all men; and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

Le Sueur painted this picture at the age of 32 years; and exhibits in it the most sublime powers of thought.What inspiration! what strength! what majesty is displayed in saint Paul! what confidence, what submission in those assembled about him! How noble are the attitudes of his personages! how just the expressions! what style in the draperies! If any doubt remained on the subject of the picture, we are soon convinced by remarking the grand temple in the back-ground, and the statue of Diana which ornaments one of the niches of the peristyle.
