Of fleeting Time here let us make Enquiry;
Say, what is Time, the Subject of each Di'ry?
Or let the Ancients fay, for here we'll quote
What Sages old and ancient Poets wrote;
And first how does the great Lucretius teach,
Take it as giv'n in English Drefs, by Creech.

How muft a Man view himfelf with Aftonifhment, when he confiders that fuch is his Situation in the Scale of Being, that he may truly fay to Guardians cœleftial, ye are my Brethren; and to the Worm, thou art my Sifter. The Soul infpired with Sentiments like thefe, when the Hour of its Departure is at hand, fprings with Extafy into the Regions of Immortality; where his Doubts fhall be cleared up, his Knowledge enlarged, and an Eternity spent in a sweet Survey of the infinite, Wonders of an Almighty Fiat; while the Child of Igno rance lies upon the Bed of Defpondency, waiting with Terror for the Day of his Diffolution. 'Tis this that paints the Bugbear in frightful Forms, and cafts a gloomy Shade before the beauteous Scene beyond the Grave.

"Sweet Fields beyond the fwelling Flood,
"Stand drefs'd in living Green :
"So to the Jews old Canaan ftood,

"While JORDAN roll'd between."

Defcend we now from Heaven to Farth, and before we leave it, view the Wonders of Creation in this our Globe, The Volume of Nature lies open before us, and God ftands manifefted in every Page.

But methinks I hear an Objection from thofe whom the Voice of Poverty calls forth early to their daily Labour, and fends Home late to their Evening Repofe. Studies like these will well become the Rich and the Great, where Providence has thrown

OBSERVATIONS.

the Cup of Confolation into the Lap of Plenty. But where preffing Neceffity and the Cries of a Family devote every Hour to painful Industry; from Perfons in this Clafs, no fuch Thing can be expected. I anfwer, were the Characters in the Volume of Nature as unintelligible as thofe in the Orientai Languages, the Objection would be juft; but here the Cafe is quite otherwife. No Need is here to wafte the Midnight Oil in fruitlefs Search to purchafe dear-bought Volumes, and fpend whole Days in perufing them. No, thefe Characters are plain to the meaneft Capacity; they lie open to us every Step we tread, and feem to fay, while the Cup of Intemperance lulls the Rich into Stupidity, rife thou to Knowledge, Wifdom fhall point the Way.

And here I am tempted to prove, that a State even under Mediocrity, is no Bar to either Happinefs, or the Improvement of the mental Faculties. The great and learned Dr. ME AD, Speaking upon this Subject, remarks as follows:

For my Part (fays he) after mature Confidera❝tion, I am long fince come to this Way of think"ing, That although Pleafure, Riches, Power, "and other Things of the like Sort, feem to be "dealt out to Mankind with too much Partiality, yet if we take in the whole Compafs of the "Matter, we shall find a greater Degree of Equa"lity of thofe Things which conftitute real Hap"pinefs, than is generally imagined.

46 People of low Condition, for the moft Part, "enjoy the common Advantages of Life, more "commodiously than thofe of the highest Rank. "Wholesome Food is acquired by moderate La"bour, which likewife mends the Appetite and Digeftion:
