EDITOR'S PREFACE.

MY DEAR YOUNG READERS,—

Another year is drawing towards its close, and so we go on from month to month, and from year to year. So Time flies, and how rapid is its flight!

My days, my weeks, my months, my years,

Fly rapid as the rolling spheres

Around the steady pole;

Time like the tide its motion keeps,

And I must plunge in endless deeps,

Where endless ages roll!

Yes: my young readers, we measure Time by days, and weeks, and months, and years, but with God all is one vast boundless immeasurable Eternity. There he takes up his dwelling place; He inhabiteth Eternity. To Him there is no yesterday, no to-morrow; all is one ever-present unchanging Now.

Think of this my dear young readers, think of this, for towards the world of Eternity you, as well as myself, are all speeding swiftly, as swiftly as the strong rapid wings of Time can carry us.

ETERNITY! what an awful word is that-what solemn considerations it suggests. Millions upon

millions of the ages of Time are less than nothing in comparison of it; for there can be no comparison where there is no limit.

And into this vast, boundless, endless Eternity, you must soon enter, and spend its countless ages in joy

or woe.

Hence the necessity and importance of real Religion to prepare you for entering on its scenes. Secure real Religion, and you are safe-safe for ever. Consider this the great work you have to do here, the chief business of your mortal life, the one thing, above all other, needful. Then it matters little, where, or when, or how, you are called away from Time into Eternity: for Long do they live, nor die too soon,

Who live till life's great work is done.

And what is real Religion but this, that you be sorry for having offended your Holy Father in heaven by sinning against Him, and seek earnestly with all your heart for his pardoning mercy through the Lord Jesus Christ, his Son, the blessed Saviour, who died for our sins. Go now to Him, and he will forgive and save you. May His grace be in your heart to guide and bless you a greater blessing I cannot wish for you—a higher you cannot obtain.
