The officers of the Exchequer would not allow the claim for the services of the substitute, and the account remained unsettled in the reign of Henry the Sixth, when Mounteney was dead. Thomas Bell, one of the archers, took another prisoner, whose ransom was 12 shillings.

VI. PERSONS WHO INDENTED JOINTLY.

MONS. ROGER LECHE, Treasurer of the King's Household; SIR PHILIP LECHE, JOHN STANLEY, and ROBERT Babthorpe, esquires, indented to bring 32 lances and 108 archers, as appears by the Indenture of Jewels. There was an issue of five tuns and one pipe of wine to Sir Philip at Harfleur. Stanley and Babthorpe are, doubtless, the same persons who have occurred before.

JAMES BLOUNT, RICHARD EITON, JOHN CHETHAM, and WILLIAM BLACKBOURN, esquires, covenanted to serve with 12 archers.

JOHN CHETWYND, RALPH POPE, NICHOLAS CARY, and WILLIAM BURTON, esquires, entered into a joint Indenture, on April 29. Their Jewel Indenture is dated June 20. They undertook to bring 12 archers. Chetwynd returned from Harfleur with the king's license, but the 3 archers, who were his contingent, went on to Agincourt. Burton and his 3 archers all left the army at Harfleur. When all was over, disputes arose among this party respecting the jewels, which were not composed in the 7th of Henry the Sixth, Burton being then dead, and Hugh Burton acting as his representative. Pope we have had before.

NICHOLAS HORTON, HENRY BROMLEY, JOHN CLYNK, WILLIAM WELDE, and JOHN LOUTH, indented to serve with either 11 or 12 archers, for the two Indentures are at variance. Welde and Louth, with 3 archers, remained at Harfleur. The rest passed on with the king.

WILLIAM HARGROVE, JOHN HARGROVE, THOMAS SCARLET, and GILES THORNDON, esquires, indented to serve with 12 archers, as appears by the Indenture of Jewels.

ROBERT HILLION and JOHN CLEMENTS, esquires, with 6 archers. Indenture of Jewels.

RICHARD HUDLESTON and WILLIAM HUDLESTON.-Nothing remains but their Indenture of Jewels.

ROBERT LACOCK, JOHN KILNER, and ROBERT HETON or HOTON (who were all dead at the time when the account was rendered), and WILLIAM WIGHTMAN, RICHARD PARKER, and THOMAS LYCHEBARROW, "Esquires of the King," indented to bring with them 18 archers into the field.

WILLIAM MARSHALL, WILLIAM POPE, and THOMAS BOLD. -It appears, by an Indenture of Jewels, that they had stipulated to bring 3 lances and 9 archers. Thomas de Bold and Jacob Hager, esquires, also entered jointly into indenture to serve with 3 archers.

WILLIAM DE ORRELL, THURSTAN DE ANDERTON, HENRY de Pemberton, HENRY BLUNDELL, and ADAM WHITYNGHAM, esquires, covenanted to serve with 12 archers. Whityngham died at Harfleur. The rest were at Agincourt.

JOHN PRENTYS, THOMAS WALBERE, and WILLIAM BONETEMPS indented jointly to serve with 3 archers.

THOMAS BRIDDE, RALPH APPELTON, WILLIAM PEK, ROBERT ALLERTON, and RICHARD received jointly jewels in

pledge by indenture.

And here it may be proper to repeat the names of the 10 knights or esquires of the county of Lancaster, always famous for its bowmen, who entered into separate covenants with Sir Robert Urswick, the sheriff, to bring each 50 archers.
