TO CORNELIUS CHASE.

ESTEEMED FRIEND, —

Two years ago, word came to me, like the startling toll of the village church bell, that the life of your daughter Mary was ebbing fast. I broke from business, and sought out the yet unknown way among the silent hills to your retired home. You met me at the door, took my hand,- for you knew me, though you had never seen me, and led me with quiet step to her bedside. The flush of setting life was on her cheek, and the brightness of a glory soon to be revealed shone from her dark eyes, as she said with a smile of earnest greeting, 'I thank thee, for I wished to see thee again before I die.' Then she spoke words of faith and hope and joy, so full of beauty and truth. 'Hard it is,' she said, to part with friends; my cup of life has mantled to overflowing with choice wine; but Heaven now is nigh, and soon I shall drink it new Father's kingdom.' And then in animating words of encouragement for the life before me and with a prayer of blessing, she bade me Farewell, in
