SAINT ZANOBE

RESSUSCITANT UN ENFANT.

Les circonstances de la vie de saint Zanobe sont peu connues, parce que les annales où on aurait pu trouver quelques détails relatifs à son histoire périrent dans l'incendie qui consuma une partie des archives de l'église de Florence dans le x1° siècle; cependant on sait que ce saint évêque vivait à la fin du ive siècle, et qu'il se fit remarquer par sa grande piété. On raconte aussi qu'une dame française, allant à Rome, laissa son fils malade à Florence, et qu'elle le confia aux soins de l'évêque de cette ville. Ce jeune homme étant mort, le saint prélat le fit déposer sur la place publique, et tourna processionnellement avec le clergé autour de ce corps inanimé; puis, étant à genoux, il invoqua la bonté céleste avec tant de larmes et une foi si grande, que Dieu écouta sa prière et l'exauça en rappelant le jeune homme à la vie.

Ce tableau, de Ridolphe Ghirlandaio, est remarquable par la vigueur du coloris, qui cependant est un peu brun dans les chairs; il est également digne d'attention à cause de la variété et de la beauté des expressions. La tête de saint Zanobe est pleine de ferveur, elle indique parfaitement son extrême confiance en Dieu.

ST. ZANOBI

RAISING A CHILD.

The circumstances of St. Zanobi's life are little known, because the documents, where any details respecting his history might have been found, were destroyed in the fire, which, in the eleventh century, consumed a part of the archives of the church of Florence. Nevertheless it is known that this holy Bishop lived at the end of the fourth century, and was remarkable for his great piety. It is also related that a French lady, on her way to Rome, left at Florence her son, who was ill; and entrusted him to the care of the Bishop of that town. The young man being dead, the holy prelate, caused him to be placed in the public square, and, with the clergy, turned in procession around the corpse: then on his knees, he invoked the heavenly power with so many tears, and so ardent a faith, that God listened to his prayer and granted it, by returning the young man to life.

This picture, by Ridolfi Ghirlandaio, is remarkable for its bold colouring, which, however, is rather dusky in the carnations it is also admirable for the variety and beauty of the different expressions. The countenance of St. Zanobi is full of fervour; it indicates his perfect confidence in God.
