Let ́all, with thankful hearts, agree
To keep the festival:

2 Not with the leaven, as of old,
Of sin and malice fed;

But with unfeign'd sincerity,

And truth's unleaven'd bread.
3 Christ being raised by power divine,
And rescu'd from the grave,

Shall die no more; death shall on him
No more dominion have.

4 For that he died, 'twas for our sins
He once vouchsaf'd to die:

But that he lives, he lives to God
For all eternity.

5 So count yourselves as dead to sin,
But graciously restor❜d,

And made, henceforth, alive to God,
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

HYMN 69.

(III. 1.)

1 CHRIST the Lord is ris'n to-day,
Sons of men and angels say:
Raise your joys and triumphs high,
Sing ye heavens, and earth reply!
2 Love's redeeming work is done,
Fought the fight, the vict'ry won:
Jesus' agony is o'er,

Darkness veils the earth no more.

S Vain the stone, the watch, the seal,
Christ has burst the gates of hell;
Death in vain forbids him rise,
Christ hath open'd paradise.

4 Soar we now where Christ hath led,
Following our exalted Head;

1

Made like him, like him we rise-
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies.

YE

[blocks in formation]

E faithful souls who Jesus know, If risen indeed with him ye are, Superior to the joys below,

His resurrection's power declare:

2 Your faith by holy tempers prove, By actions show your sins forgiven, And seek the glorious things above, And follow Christ, your head, to heaven. 3 There your exalted Saviour see, Seated at God's right hand again, In all his Father's majesty,

In everlasting power to reign.

4 To him continually aspire,

Contending for your destin'd place,

And emulate the angel choir,

And only live to love and praise.

1 Cor. xv. 20, 21, 22. Col. iii. 1. ́

1 CHRIST from the dead is rais'd, and made

The First Fruits of the tomb; For, as by man came death, by man

Did resurrection come.

2 For, as in Adam all mankind
Did guilt and death derive;
So, by the righteousness of Christ,
Shall all be made alive.

3 If then ye risen are with Christ,
Seek only how to get

The things which are above, where Christ
At God's right hand is set.

ASCENSION.

HYMN 72.

(L. M.)

1 НЕ dies! the Friend of sinners dies! Lo! Salem's daughters weep around! A solemn darkness veils the skies!

A sudden trembling shakes the ground! 2 Ye saints approach! the anguish view, Of him who groans beneath your load; He gives his precious life for you, For you he sheds his precious blood. 3 Here's love and grief beyond degree! The Lord of glory dies for men! But lo! what sudden joys we see! Jesus, the dead, revives again!

4 The rising God forsakes the tomb; Up to his Father's court he flies;

Cherubic legions guard him home,

And shout him welcome to the skies! 5 Break off your tears, ye saints, and tell How high our great Deliv'rer reigns; Sing how he spoil'd the hosts of hell, And led the tyrant death in chains! 6 Say, "Live for ever, glorious King,

"Born to redeem, instruct, and save!" Then ask-"O death, where is thy sting! "And where thy victory, O grave!"

HYMN 73.

(L. M.) 1 OUR Lord is risen from the dead, Our Jesus is gone up on high; The pow'rs of hell are captive led, Dragg'd to the portals of the sky. 2 There his triumphal chariot waits, And angels chant the solemn lay; "Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates! "Ye everlasting doors, give way!" 3 Loose all your bars of massy light, And wide unfold the radiant scene; He claims those mansions as his right; Receive the King of Glory in.

4 "Who is the King of Glory, who ?”

The Lord that all his foes o'ercame, The world, sin, death, and hell o'erthrew, And Jesus is the conq'ror's name.

5 Lo! his triumphal chariot waits,

And angels chant the solemn lay, "Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates! "Ye everlasting doors, give way!" 6" Who is the King of Glory, who?" The Lord of boundless power possess'd, The King of saints and angels too, God over all, for ever bless'd!

1 COME, Holy Ghost! Creator, come,

Inspire these souls of thine;

Till every heart which thou hast made
Be filled with grace divine.

2 Thou art the Comforter, the gift
Of God, and fire of love;
The everlasting spring of joy,
And unction from above.

3 Thy gifts are manifold, thou writ'st
God's law in each true heart;
The promise of the Father, thou
Dost heavenly speech impart.
4 Enlighten our dark souls, till they
Thy sacred love embrace;
Assist our minds, by nature frail,
With thy celestial grace.

5 Drive far from us the mortal foe,
And give us peace within,
That, by thy guidance blest, we may
Escape the snares of sin.

6 Teach us the Father to confess,
And Son, from death reviv'd,
And thee, with both, O Holy Ghost,
Who art from both deriv'd.

HYMN 75.

(c. M.)

1 COME, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove, With all thy quick' ning powers;

Kindle a flame of sacred love

In these cold hearts of ours.

2 See how we grovel here below,
Fond of these earthly toys;
Our souls, how heavily they go,
To reach eternal joys!

3 In vain we tune our lifeless songs,
In vain we strive to rise!
Hosannas languish on our tongues,
And our devotion dies.

4 Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove,
With all thy quick'ning powers;
Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours.

HYMN 76.

(C. M.)

1 HE'S come! let every knee be bent,

All hearts new joy resume;

Sing, ye redeem'd, with one consent, "The Comforter is come.

2 What greater gift, what greater love,
Could God on man bestow?

Angels for this rejoice above,
Let man rejoice below!

3 Hail, blessed Spirit! may each soul
Thy sacred influence feel;

Do thou each sinful thought control,
And fix our wavering zeal!

4 Thou to the conscience dost convey
Those checks which we should know;
Thy motions point to us the way;
Thou giv'st us strength to go.

TRINITY SUNDAY.

HYMN 77.

1 HOLY, holy, holy Lord,

(L. M.)

Bright in thy deeds and in thy name,

Forever be thy name ador'd,

Thy glories let the world proclaim!
2 O Jesus, Lamb once crucified
To take our load of sins away,
Thine be the hymn that rolls its tide
Along the realms of upper day!
3 O Holy Spirit, from above,

In streams of light and glory giv❜n,
Thou source of ecstasy and love,

Thy praises ring through earth and heav'n! 4 O God triune! to thee we owe

Our every thought, our every song;

And ever may thy praises flow

From saint and seraph's burning tongue!

[blocks in formation]

1 FATHER of all, whose love profound
A ransom for our souls hath found,
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy pard'ning love extend!
2 Almighty Son, incarnate Word,
Our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord,
