And to begin: He very probably caught the general idea of Caliban's deformity, from a fine original defeription of Luft in the Farry Queen, Book IV. Cant. vii. Stan. 5. It was to weet, a wild and favage man, Yet was no man, but only like in shape, And eke in ftature higher by afpan,

HE Caliban of Shakefpeare has been conftantly produced as an original character, created, independent of all imitation, by an amazing effort of the poet's fancy; and has been univerLay mentioned as a striking proof of Shakespeare's unaccountable invention, and boundless energy of imagination. Lord Falkland, Lord Vaughan, and Mr. Selden, have concurred in obferving, "That Shakespeare had not only found out a stw character in his Caliban, but had also devised and adapted a netu Mazzer of language for that character."
