278 ページ - Let the soldier be abroad if he will; he can do nothing in this age. There is another personage abroad — a personage less imposing — in the eyes of some perhaps insignificant. The schoolmaster is abroad, and I trust to him, armed with his primer, against the soldier in full military array.
133 ページ - Fortune, that with malicious joy Does man, her slave, oppress, Proud of her office to destroy, Is seldom pleased to bless : Still various, and inconstant still, But with an inclination to be ill, Promotes, degrades, delights in strife, And makes a lottery of life. I can enjoy her while she's kind ; But when she dances in the wind, And shakes the wings, and will not stay, I puff the prostitute away : The little or the much she gave, is quietly resigned ; . Content with poverty, my soul I arm, And...
38 ページ - Like clouds that rake the mountainsummits, Or waves that own no curbing hand. How fast has brother followed brother From sunshine to the sunless land ! Yet I, whose lids from infant slumber Were earlier raised, remain to hear A timid voice, that asks in whispers, " Who next will drop and disappear...
289 ページ - That doth not vanish as soon as 'tis heard : Once in an age is humanity stirred. Once in a century springs forth a deed From the dark bands of forgetfulness freed, Destined to shine, and to help, and to lead : Yet not e'en thus, escape we our lot : — The deed lasts in memory, the doer is not : The word liveth on, but the voice is forgot.
238 ページ - This sojourn was, I think, an important circumstance in my education. Nothing contributes more to nourish elevation of sentiments in a people, than the large and free character of their habitations.
13 ページ - La vie est vaine : Un peu d'amour, Un peu de haine... Et puis — bon jour ! La vie est breve: Un peu d'espoir, Un peu de reve... Et puis — bon soir ! The above is a terse and true criticism of this life without hope of a future one.
274 ページ - Satan, and set up every where the standard of Christ. Abolish the reign of sin, and establish the kingdom of grace in all hearts. Let humility triumph over pride and ambition; charity over hatred, envy, and malice; purity and temperance over lust and excess ; meekness over passion ; and disinterestedness and poverty of spirit over covetousness and the love of this perishable world. Let the gospel of Christ, both in its belief and practice, prevail throughout the world.
44 ページ - Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.
132 ページ - It was at Rome, on the 15th of October 1764, as I sat musing amidst the ruins of the Capitol, while the bare-footed friars were singing vespers in the Temple of Jupiter, that the idea of writing the decline and fall of the city first started to my mind.
78 ページ - The nursling of the Mighty Mother died, And went where all his fathers went before. — On thee, too, in thy day Of childhood, Arthur, did some check have power, That, radiant though thou wert, thou couldst but stay, Bringer of heavenly light, a human hour ? Therefore our happy guest Knew care, and knew unrest, And weakness warn'd him, and he fear'd decline.
