THE appearance of these volumes has been postponed on various accounts considerably beyond the time originally contemplated; it is hoped that more has been gained in completeness than lost by delay. New materials have continually come to hand. The Author's scattered poems, preserved by the care of his friends, have been gradually gathered in. His essays and other contributions to different periodicals have been placed at the Editor's disposal. The copyrights of a volume of poems and of a biographical work, entitled, Biographia Borealis, or Lives of the Northern Worthies, brought out under considerable disadvantage at Leeds, in the year 1833, have been repurchased. A mass of interesting matter has been

found written in the margins of books, or dispersed through an immense number of note-books. It is now proposed to edit a careful selection from these various remains, in three or more several issues, each constituting an independent whole, but forming, when complete, an entire collection of his writings, as far as they shall be deemed worthy of permanent preservation.

The present volumes comprise, in addition to an introductory Memoir, the volume of poems above mentioned, which has been long out of print, and a second volume of poetry almost entirely posthumous, and of greater extent and more varied character, produced agreeably to a long-cherished intention of the Author.

This will be followed by a collection of the Author's essays, both published and unpublished, with a selection from his Marginalia, and other miscellaneous writings;* and, lastly, it is intended to prepare a corrected edition of the Northern
