Hymn.

The voice that bids us all repent,

The winter past, reviving flowers,

Thine earthly Sabbaths, Lord, we love,

This God is the God we adore,

Thrice happy souls, who born of heaven,

Thro' all the changing scenes of life,
Thro' Christ when we together came,
Thro' sorrow's night and danger's path,
Thro' this wide wilderness I roam,
Thy people, Lord, who trust thy word,
Thy presence, gracious God afford,
'Tis a point I long to know,

'Tis finish'd, so the Saviour cried,
'Tis finish'd, the conflict is past,
'Tis first of all thyself to know,
"Tis hard from those we love, to go,
'fis midnight--and on Olive's brow,
'Tis ours to sojourn in a waste,
'Tis past-the dreadful stormy night,
To-day, if ye will hear his voice,
To God I cry'd when troubles rose,
To-morrow, Lord, is thine,
To the cross where Jesus dies,
To whom, my Saviour, shall I go,
Trembling before thine awful throne,

U

NHAPPY city, hadst thou known, United prayers ascend to thee, Unveil thy bosom, faithful tomb,

VAIN man, thy fond pursuit forbear,

WAIT, O my soul, thy Maker's will,

Weary of struggling with my pain, "We've no abiding city here," Telcome, welcome, dear Redeemer, lcome, ye hopeful heirs of heaven,

Were once our vain desires subdued,
We wander in a thorny maze,
What is the thing of greatest price,
What jarring natures dwell within,
What must I do? the Jailor cries,
What shall the dying sinner do,
What sinners value I resign,

What think ye of Christ is the test,

What, tho' the arm of conquering death,

296

What various hindrances we meet,

286

When any turn from Zion's way,
When bending o'er the brink of life,
When blooming youth is snatch'd away,
When frowning death appears,

When gathering clouds around I view,
When I can read my title clear,

When Jesus bade me leave the world,
When Jesus dwelt in mortal clay,
When languor and disease invade,

When lowering clouds deform the sky,

When on the third auspicious day,
When night descends in sable guise,

[blocks in formation]

When will the happy trump proclaim,
When with my mind devoutly press'd,
Where are the dead? in heaven or hell,
Wherefore should man, frail child of clay,
Where is my God? does he retire,
Where is now our boasted Saviour,
Where shall we sinners hide our heads?
While I to grief my soul gave way,
While life prolongs its precious light,
While Sinai roars, and round the earth,

While the heralds of salvation,
Whilst thee I seek, protecting Power,
Who but thou. Almighty Spirit,

Why should the christian waste in sighs,
Why sinks my weak desponding mind,
With cheerful voices rise and sing,
With conscious guilt and bleeding heart,
With grateful hearts and tuneful lays,
With humble heart and tongue,
