The late Sir Jas. Clerk, who died Feb. 6, 1783, fucceeded his father Sir John, one of the barons of the exchequer of Scotland. Sir James having no children by his lady, the title and eftate devolved to his younger brother, Sir Geo. C. one of the commiffioners of cufioms at Edinburgh, who died very lately, having enjoyed them but a fhort time. His death is an irreparable lose to that country, he being a perfon of great integrity and worth, an univerfal promoter of every article of manufacture, agriculture, mechanics, &c. and of every contrivance for the good of the kingdom. He was an eminent draughtsman, as well as his brother John C. efq; of Elding, and has etched a variety of views in Scotland, in a ftyle approaching to Hollar's. Sir George has left iffue Sir John, and we believe (if living) another fon abroad. Sir John has no children; but his uncle John has several.

Mr. Edwards, bookseller, of Leeds, is not dead, as mentioned in our laft, p. 238.-We fhall use more caution in inserting articles from country news-papers, where they are not unfrequently inferted to ferve a particular purpofe, without regard to truth.

Mr. Keymer (fee pp. 238, 239) was fteward of the marshalfea court, and freward and one of the judges of the palace court of Weftminfter, The former is in the gift of the lord fteward of the household, the latter of the king, but it has been the practice to give the latter to the perfon named by the lord fteward to the former.

Mr. Angell of Stockwell (fee p. 239) was a moft fingular man. In poffeffion of a very large fortune, he lived in the most fordid manner. By his will he has left a confiderable fum to erect a building at Stockwell for the habitation of a certain number of decayed gentlemen who can prove a certain number of defcents, and who are to receive a liberal al lowance; the remainder of his fortune to

many years recorder of Southwold in Suffolk, and fteward of Norwich.

Some months fiace, Gen. Jorden Wren, poffeffed of confiderable property, and, as fuppofed, inteftate. Two perfons farted as relations, and entered separate caveats to prevent adminiftration. Each party hath called on the other to prove their confanguinity. On the evening of the 29th of March, an unknown perfon dropped a letter in the area of a gentleman's houfe in Marlborough-fir. containing the will of the late general, in which many legacies are left to hospitals, &c. One of the above contending parties is named refiduary legatee, and the gentleman at whofe honfe it was delivered, with three other very refpeétable characters, are appointed executors. will is executed by the General, in the prefence of two witneffes, viz. Edward Bayley and Samuel Stead, who, notwithstanding every poffible means hath been used, are not yet difcovered. In the will it is, moreover, his exprefs defire to he buried in the General't, Row, Westminster-Abbey, and he has bequeathed a particular fum for that purpose. Being inter red in Surrey by one of the claimants, before the will appeared on its eftablishment, he mustbe removed to the appointed depofitory. It is remarkable, neither the drawer, copyer, nor

dropper, or any perfon concerned in the will, have hitherto ftepped forward. It therefore is conjectured (and feemingly with good foundation), that it was entrusted by the General, previous to his death, with fome fince difap pointed perfon.
