FLEMISH SCHOOL, cooooo RUBENS. cooooo PRIVATE COLLECTION. THE HOLY FAMILY. A remarkable peculiarity appears in this composition, as it presents two children, two women, and two old men; these six figures form two groups of three each, and are both composed after the same manner. This is certainly a strange fault to meet with in such a painter as Rubens, who is as much distinguished by the beauty of his compositions as by the truth and vigour of his colouring. On the left are saint Joseph, the Virgin, and the infant Jesus; on the right are Zachary, saint Elisabeth, and saint John; the back-ground represents a landscape, where a long veil hangs on a tree loaded with fruit, a bough of which Zachary has just gathered and is offering to the child Jesus. On the right of the fore-ground is the little saint John's lamb, and two rabbits on the left. This picture was to be seen in Saint James's church, Brussels; there was probably a copy of it in the earl of Chesterfield's collection, from which an engraving was made by R. Earlom, in 1771. Une singularité asscz remarquable se présente dans cette composition, puisqu'on y voit deux enfans, deux femmes et deux vieillards; ces six figures sont divisées en deux groupes de trois figures chaque, et ils sont l'un et l'autre composés de la même manière. Certainement c'est une faute qu'il est étonnant de rencontrer dans un peintre tel que Rubens, qui est aussi remarquable par la beauté de ses compositions que par la vérité et la vigueur de sa couleur. A gauche se voient saint Joseph, la Vierge et l'enfant Jésus; à droite sont Zacharie, sainte Élisabeth et saint Jean; le fond est un paysage; on y voit un grand voile accroché à un arbre chargé de fruits, dont Zacharie vient de cueillir une branche qu'il présente à l'enfant Jésus. Sur le devant, à droite, on aperçoit l'agneau du petit saint Jean, et à gauche deux lapins. On voyait ce tableau dans l'église de Saint-Jacques de Bruxelles; il s'en trouvait probablement dans le cabinet du comte de Chesterfield une esquisse, d'après laquelle il a été gravé par R.
