humble Virgin, to be fubject to the Weaknefs of a little Child, to grow up in a Life of Privacy, and Labour, to declare thy felf at last the Redeemer of the World, by establishing a perfect Law of Grace, and confirming it with innumerable Miracles, and fuffering for it intolerable Perfecutions, even to Death upon the Crofs; work in us, we beseech thee, a due, and adoring Senfe of thy infinite Love, that believing in thee as our Lord and Saviour, we may truft in thy infinite Merits, imitate thy holy Example, obey thy Commands, and finally enjoy thy Promifes, who, with the Father, and the Holy Ghoft, liveth and reigneth, One God, World without End. Amen.

Compline for our B. Saviour.

V. Our Help is in, &c. as at Sunday Compline.

Antiphon.

Whither, O my God, fhould we go but unto thee? thou haft the Words of eternal Life.

R

PSALM CII.

Etire now, O my Soul from thy common Thoughts; permitted to enterttain thy less serious Hours.

Re

Retire, and call thy wandring Fancies home; and fpeedily range them into Peace, and Order.

That fo thou may'ft be prepared to hear thy Lord invite thee, among the reft, to talte his Sweetness.

Come to me (faith he) all ye that labour, and are heavy laden, and I will give you Reft.

Take my Toke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek, and lowly in Heart; and fhall find Reft unto your Souls.

ye

For my Yoak is eafie; and my Burthen light. Enough, dear Lord, enough is faid; to draw all the World to thy holy Difcipline. What can be offer'd so agreeable to our Natures; too much, alas, inclin'd to Pleafure, and Profit.

What can be offer'd fo powerfully attractive; as to make our Work delightful, and then reward it?

As to propofe an Employment like the Mufick of Churches; devout, and sweet, and gainful to the Performers.

Whither, O my God, fhould we go, but unto thee? thou haft the Words of eternal Life.

Thou art our wifeft Inftructor to know what we do; and only Enabler to do what we know.

Thou art the free Beftower of all we have; and faithful Promifer of all we hope.

Thou

Thou kindly call'ft us; O make us glad to hear thy Voice; and conftantly follow it till we come to thee.

Suffer us no longer to go aftray like loft Sheep; wandring up and down in our own By-ways.

Suffer us no longer to be distracted about many things; from thee, O Lord, who art but one.

But gather us up from the World into our felves; then take us from our felves into thee:

There to be ravifh'd with thy holy Embraces; there to be feafted with the Antipafts of Heaven.

O how unfpeakable are thy Sweetnesses, O Lord; which thou haft hid for those that fear thee;

Which thou haft partly revealed to thofe that love thee, and keep their Taftes uncorrupted with the World.

But, O what are they then to those that fee thee; and in that Sight fee all things elfe.

To those who rejoyce perpetually before thee; and in that Joy find all Joys elfe.

O beauteous Truth, which known, enforces Love, and loved begets Felicity!

Live thou for ever in my faithful Memory; and be my conftant Guide in all my Ways.

Still let me think on thofe Joys above; and undervalue all things compared to my Salvation.

Still

Still let me think on my Saviour's Love; that purchas'd for me all thofe Joys.

O thou, my ador'd Redeemer, be thou the Master-wifh of my Heart; the Scope and End of all my Time.

Soon as I awake, let me look up to thee; and when I rise,' first lowly bow to thee. Often in the Day let me call in my Thoughts to thee; and when I go to Rest clofe up mine Eyes in thee.

So fhall my Time be govern'd by thy Grace; and my Eternity crown'd with thy Glory.

Glory be to the Father, &c.

As it was in the Beginning, &c.

MY

PSLAM CHI.

Y God, when I remember thofe Words of thine; Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at Hand:

When I confider, they were the first that ever thou spakeft in Publick; and that it was the chofen Text of the eternal Wisdom:

Inftantly I'm ftruck with the Importance of the Duty, and deeply affected with the Power of the Motive.

If what this last Line fays be not wholly true, but repeated in Courfe as a Form of Devotion:

Forgive, dear Lord, the Deceitfulness of my Heart; and make me think, as well as Jay, my Prayers.

Make

L

Make me apply those searching Words unto my felf; and bind them faft on my own Soul.

Repent, O my Soul, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand; repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven depends upon thy Re pentance.

Unhappy me! I cannot live without Sin, nor hope for Pardon without due Repen

tance.

I cannot repent without the Grace of God; nor obtain his Grace without his own free Gift.

O my fweet Saviour, who cam'ft not to call the Righteous; but, fuch as I am, Sin ners to Repentance!

Since I am not strong enough to be per fectly innocent; at least make me humble enough to be truly penitent.

Make me heartily forry for what I have done amifs; and not do again what will make me forry.

Wo to the Day, and Hour wherein finned; wo to the many Days, and Hours I have foolishly mifpent.

Or rather, wo be unto me, who have abused both Days and Hours, allow'd by thy Goodness to work out my Salvation.

Deliver me, O Lord, from the Punishments I deferve; deliver me from the Sin, that deferves thofe Punishments.

Teach me that fafe, and easie Method of cenfuring my felf to be acquitted by thee.
