War-Office, 30th November, 1812.-SIR, I have the honour to transmit herewith, for your information, a printed copy of the Prince Regent's Warrant of the 26th September last, abolishing the former practice of transferring the payment of the Pensions of the Widows of Officers of the Land Forces, from Great-Britain to Ireland, and vice versa, upon the removal of regiments from one establishment to the other; and directing that, in future, every Widow shall receive payment of her Pension in the country in which she resides.

You will, however, be pleased to observe, that in the first instance, every Widow is to be placed upon the Pension List of the Establishment to which the regiment in which her husband was serving, at the time of his death, shall belong.

WARRANT FOR THE MORE CONVENIENT PAYMENT OF THE PENSIONS TO THE WIDOWS OF OFFICERS OF THE LAND FORCES, RESIDING IN GREAT-BRITAIN OR IRELAND, DATED SEPT. 25, 1812.

Whereas it has been represented unto us, by our Secretary at War, that much inconvenience has arisen to the Widows of Officers of the Land Service, from the present mode of transferring the payment of their Pensions from the British to the Irish establisment, and vice versa, from the Irish to the British establishment, upon the removal of the regiments to which their late husbands belonged; and that great convenience would result to them from an abolition of the existing practice of issuing in every case the allowances to the said Widows from the establishment on which the corps concerned may happen to be serving at the time of payment, which representation we have taken into our most serious consideration, and being desirous of contributing as far as possible to the comfort and accommodation of the individuals concerned, by enabling each Widow to receive the pension from the establishment of that country in which she shall reside, without being put to any unnecessary expence, our will and pleasure is, in the name and on the behalf of his Majesty, that the following arrangement do take place in the United Kingdom from and after the date of this Warrant, viz.

1st. That each Widow residing in Great-Britain be paid by the PaymasterGeneral, and every Widow residing in Ireland be paid under the direction of the government of that country, without regard to the establishment upon which the regiment to which her husband belonged may be.—2dly, That when an Officer dies, whose Widow may be entitled to the Pension, the application for placing her upon the Pension List, together with the documents required to substantiate the claim

shall be transmitted to the War-Office in London, or to the War-Office in Dublin Castle, according as the regiment may be upon the British or the Irish Establishment; and if the title of the Widow to the Bounty be sufficiently authenticated, she is then to be placed upon the List of that country in which the regiment may be; and if not resident in that part of the United Kingdom in which her Pension would fall to be issued, a notification of her claim, when established as aforesaid, and of her actual place of abode, shall be made to the government of Great-Britain or Ireland, as the case may be, in order to her being paid as directed in article 1st of this warrant.-3dly. In cases in which a Widow after having been placed upon the Pension List, and having received a portion of her pension, shall be desirous of changing her residence from Great-Britain to Ireland, or vice versa, two months previous notice shall be given by such Widow, to the War-Office of the country in which she is then resident, of her intended removal, and a notification shall then be made by that Office to the War-Office in the other country, in order that the Widow may receive the Pension in Great-Britain or in Ireland, from the termination of the then current four months in which such notice shall have been received. 4thly. No fee or deduction whatever is to be made from the Pension of any Widow, either in Great-Britain or Ireland, upon her being transferred from one to the other establishment, in consequence of this arrangement. And for so doing, this shall be as well to the Paymaster-General of our Forces, as to all others whom it doth or may concern, a sufficient warrant, authority, or direction.-Given at our Court at Carlton-House, this 25th day of September, 1812, in the 52d year of His Majesty's reign. By His Royal Highness's command, PALMERSTON.

MEMORANDUM.-Any Widow residing in Great-Britain, whose Pension is now issued in Ireland, should notify her place of residence to the War-Office in Dublin, in order that official directions may be given for the payment of her pension in Great-Britain. In like manner any Widow residing in Ireland, whose Pension is now issued in Great-Britain, should make a similar report, to the War-Office in London, when instructions will be given for the payment of her Pension in Ireland. If a Widow should afterwards change her place of residence, she is to give timely notice of her intention, in the mode pointed out in the above Warrant.

Barrack-Office, Nov. 1812.-SIR, Experiments having been made to ascertain the quantity of coals necessary to be issued to school-rooms in Barracks, I am directed by the Commissioner for the Affairs of Barracks to inform you, that one room's allowance of coals, according to the King's Warrant, may be issued to schools held in Barrack-rooms, originally constructed for eight or twelve men; but when the school is held in a room which is constructed for a greater number of men, four bushels and a half per week may be issued. In Barracks where wood is used, the school-room will also be entitled to an issue for lighting the fire. As the schools are to be kept open in the day time only, candles will not be necessary.
