Ce tableau, l'un des plus beaux ouvrages du Titien, fut fait à Venise en 1528 pour l'église de Saint-Jean et Saint-Paul ; le peintre était alors âgé de quarante-huit ans, il fut chargé de l'exécuter par suite d'un concours entre lui et Palme le Vieux.

Saint Pierre naquit à Vérone vers 1205 instruit par un maître catholique, il professa cette religion malgré son père; dès l'âge de quinze ans, il entra dans l'ordre de saint Dominique, puis prêcha avec zèle et avec succès. Nommé inquisiteur, son ardeur s'accrut au milieu des dangers auxquels l'exposait sa place; elle fut telle que, suivant l'expression d'un de ses historiens, « semblable à un lion parmi des bêtes féroces, il ne laissa nul repos aux hérétiques. » Quelques habitans de Milan conspirèrent contre sa vie, et la veille de Pâques, sur le chemin de Côme, un assassin nommé Cavina l'atteignit à l'extrémité d'un bois, le frappa et le renversa baigné dans son sang; puis, tandis qu'il courait pour faire périr le frère Dominique, son compagnon, il aperçut saint Pierre à genoux récitant le symbole des apôtres. L'assassin, saisi d'une nouvelle fureur, frappe de nouveau sa victime et elle expire.

Tout est grand, énergique, expressif dans cette belle peinture. La noblesse des figures, la hardiesse et la vérité des raccourcis, l'expression mâle des têtes, le développement des draperies agitées par le vent, la chaleur du coloris, la vigueur du paysage, sont également dignes d'admiration.

Ce tableau, peint sur bois, vint au Musée de Paris, où il fut mis sur toile en 1799 par M. Haquin, puis reporté à Venise en 1815. Il a été gravé par Martin Rota, V. Lefèvre et H. Laurent. Haut., 15 pieds 7 pouces ; larg., 9 pieds 4 pouces.

THE DOMINICAN.

This picture, one of Titian's finest works, was painted at Venice, in 1528, for the church of St. John and St. Paul : this great artist was then forty eight years old, and he was commanded to execute it, in consequence of a competition between him and Palma, called I! Vecchio, or the old man.

St. Peter was born at Verona, towards the year 1205 : educated by a catholic master, he professed that religion notwithstanding his father. As early as the age of fifteen he entered the order of St. Dominic, and preached, both with zeal and success. Being named inquisitor, his ardour increased in the midst of the dangers to which his situation exposed him, and was such, according to the expression of one of his historians, that like unto a lion among ferocious beasts, he allowed no rest to the heretics. » Some inhabitants of Milan conspired against his life, and at the eve of Easter, on the road to Como, an assassin named Cavina met him, near the borders of a wood, struck him and threw him down, weltering in his blood : then, whilst he was running to put to death brother Dominico, his companion, he saw St. Peter on his knees repeating the Apostles' creed; the assassin, who was enraged anew, again, struck his victim, who then expired.

In this beautiful picture, every thing is great, forcible, and expressive. The grandeur of the figures, the boldness and truth of the foreshortenings, the manly expression of the heads, the display of the draperies agitated by the wind, the warmth of the colouring, and the nobleness of the landscape, are equally worthy of admiration.

This picture, painted on wood, came to the Paris Museum, where, in 1799, it was transferred on canvass by M. Haquin; in 1815 it was taken back to Venice. It has been engraved by Martin Rota, V. Lefèvre, and H. Laurent.
