SAINTE MADELEINE.

Vivant du temps même de Jésus-Christ, sainte Marie-Madeleine se fit remarquer par l'ardent amour qu'elle témoigna pour le Sauveur; elle est une des saintes femmes qui l'accompagnèrent sur le Calvaire, et qui après sa mort portèrent des parfums au sépulcre pour embaumer le corps de leur divin maître. Enfin c'est elle qui, étant restée près du tombeau, y aperçut Jésus-Christ glorieux, qu'elle crut être le jardinier de ce lieu.

Le petit vase que l'on voit près de la tête de mort est un des attributs de Marie-Madeleine: il rappelle le dernier service qu'elle voulut rendre au Sauveur; mais il est cause de l'erreur qui a fait confondre cette vierge sainte avec la pécheresse pénitente dont on ignore le nom, et qui, chez Simon le Pharisien, répandit des parfums sur les pieds de Jésus-Christ. Le surnom de Madeleine lui vient de ce qu'elle habitait le bourg de Magdala, près du lac de Génézareth.

Living at the time of Jesus Christ, saint Mary Magdalen made herself conspicuous by the ardent love that attached her to our Saviour; she is one of the holy women that attended him on mount Calvary and after his death, carried spices to the sepulchre to anoint the corpse of their divine master; in short it was she that sitting by his tomb, saw Jesus Christ in all his glory, supposing him to be the gardener of that place.

The small vase that is near the scull, is one of the attributes of Mary Magdalen, and puts in mind of the last service she would do to our Saviour; but that vase is the cause of a very common error that makes people confound that holy maid with the sinful and penitent woman whose name is unknown, and who poured ointment on the feet of Jesus Christ. The surname of Magdalen comes from her inhabiting a borough called Magdala by the lake of Genezareth.
