The composition of this picture is admirable, and is not below that of saint Paul preaching the Ephesians, which Le Sueur painted for Notre-Dame church. It was executed for Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois church, and the loss of it, an unexplicable event, will ever be deeply regretted by all the friends of fine arts. A handsomer disposition cannot be looked upon, neither a more favourable distribution of masses and groups, a nobler and more pathetical scene. As to colouring, we can judge of it but by a copy, pretty well executed, which is to be seen in an artist's collection: it is not superior to that of the picture of saint Paul, and it is not under that head that Le Sueur's pictures are to be set forth as patterns.

The picture of the martyrdom of saint Lawrence has been engraved by Gerard Audran. This great artist, far from weakening the beauties of an original piece, as is sometimes the has always translated with the like energy the character and expression of it. A skilful drawer, he had the means of clearing the contours, when the painter had indulged his pencil to be negligent or incorrect. That justice did oftentimes Le Brun do him, whose main productions Audran has engraved in so grand a style.
