TN times of gloom and melancholy, as well as at I periods of an opposite character, literary industry is found to pursue its Objects. In the present state of Society, knowledge appears to have become one of the necessaries of Life, and the zeal to impart, and the desire to receive it, mutually keep pace together. To view these efforts of intellect, is a gratification under almost all circumstances; and reviewers, whatever may be their labours, and disgufts, have at least the consolation to reflect, that of this spectacle, they are among the first, and most accurate observers. Happy if they could persuade their readers to regard them as præceptors, and with such esteem, as Quintilian recommends to the pupils of his School, “ ut præceptores suos non minus quam ipsa studia ament; et parentes esse non quidem corporum, fed mentium credant * ;” and, with respect to authors, « ut emendati non irascentur, laudati gaudebunt: nam ut illorum officium est docere, sic horum præbere se dociles.” This, however, is rather more than we expect. At present, our business is to record, rather than to criticize; and first, as usual,
