PREFACE.

THIS BOOK is designed to serve a threefold purpose

1st. As a suitable selection of extracts in Prose and Poetry, adapted for repetition by pupil-teachers, according to the requirements of the Revised Code.

2nd. As a Text-Book, to furnish passages for teaching Parsing and Grammatical Analysis.

3rd. As a Reading Book for the Upper Classes of Schools.

The passages have been selected chiefly from the best Modern English Authors, and differ, for the most part, from those which have before appeared in other works of the kind.

The custom of learning by heart has of late years, unfortunately, been too much disused. Teachers of a former generation knew its value, indeed, in the theory, but missed it in the practice. They trusted to the quantity of the work performed, and not to the quality of it in pointing to the result obtained. But every honest teacher of the present day knows well the relative value between a feat of mere memory-in repeating, for example, a whole book of the Bible, or a whole play of Shakspeare-and the methodical and intelligent repetition of a hundred or two hundred lines of some well-chosen passage, which is thoroughly understood, and in some degree feit, by the person who recites them. This intelligent apprehension is the most essential condition of
