ENTERED according to Act of Congress, in the year 1851, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the Middle District of Tennessee.

DEDICATORY.

To BENJAMIN LINDSLEY, Esq., MRS. REBECCA LINDS

LEY, MAJ. THALES LINDSLEY, A. M., MR. ANSON G. LINDSLEY, MYRON P. LINDSLEY, A. B., AND REV. Philo E. BROWN AND LADY.

Dear and Honored Friends, -For many years, as you well know, it was the desire of your cherished ADALINE, that her brother Thales, in case he should survive her, should write a history of her life. After her marriage, she transferred this duty to me; and the day before her death, with peculiar emphasis, renewed the request, observing that it would be a solace and comfort to her friends. Furnished with scanty materials, and environed with serious embarrassments, I have done the best I could; and now beg leave to inscribe to you the result of my labors, as the most appropriate expression of my filial and fraternal regard.

JOS. CROSS. NASHVILLE, TENX., July 4, 1851.
