ON HUMILITY.

PROVERBS Xv. 33.

"Before honour is humility."

THAT is, before men can attain honour, they must first learn and practise humility. The honour of which Solomon here speaks, is not worldly honour; but that which alone deserves the name, that which our Lord Himself bids us seek after, viz. "the honour which cometh from God only1."

Before we can obtain this, we are taught, not by our text only, but by the whole Bible, that we must be humbled. Thus Solomon speaks in another place, "Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and (he repeats) before honour is humility." To the same purpose our Lord Himself speaks, Every one that exalteth himself shall be abased,

and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted 3;"
