II.

For life, without thy love,

No relish can afford:

No joy can be compar'd to this,
To ferve and please the LORD.

III.

To thee I'll lift my hands,

And praise thee while I live; Not all the dainties of a feaft, Such food or pleasure give.

IV.

In wakeful hours of night,
I call my GOD to mind;
I think how wife thy counfels are,
And all thy dealings kind.

V.

Since thou hast been my help,
To thee my spirit flies;
And on thy watchful providence
My chearful hope relies.

VI.

The fhadow of thy wings
My foul in fafety keeps:
I follow where my father leads,
And he fupports my steps.

PSALM CXXXV.

For Bleffing of GOD on the Business and
Comforts of Life.
Long Metre.

I.

F GOD fucceed not, all the coft

I And pains to build the houfe are loft,

If GOD the city will not keep,
The watchful guards as well may fleep.

II.

What if you rife before the fun,
And work and toil when day is done;
Careful and fparing eat your bread,
To fhun the poverty you dread :

III.

'Tis all in vain, till GOD hath bleft;
He can make rich, yet give us reft:
Children and friends are bleffings too,
If GOD our fov'reign make them fo.

IV.

Happy the man to whom he fends
Obedient children, faithful friends!
How fweet our daily comforts prove
When they are feafon'd with his love!

PSALM CXXXVI.

Breathing after Holiness.

Common Metre.

I.

That the LORD would guide my ways
To keep his ftatutes ftill!

O that my GOD would grant me grace
To know and do his will.

Nor let my tongue indulge deceit,
Nor act the liar's part.

III.

From vanity turn off my eyes;
Let no corrupt defign,
Nor covetous defires arife

Within this foul of mine.
IV.

Order my footsteps by thy word,
And make my heart fincere;
Let fin have no dominion, LORD,
But keep my confcience clear.

V.

My foul hath gone too far astray,
My feet too often flip;

Yet fince I've not forgot thy way,
Restore thy wand'ring sheep.

VI,

Make me to walk in thy commands;
'Tis a delightful road:

Nor let my head, or heart, or hands,
Offend against my GOD.

PSALM CXXXVII.

The true Way to please GOD.

W

Common Metre.

I.

HEREWITH fhall I approach the LORD,
And bow before his throne?

Or how procure his kind regard,
And for my guilt atone?

II.

Shall altars flame, and victims bleed,
And spicy fumes afcend?

Will these my earnest wish fucceed,
And make my GOD my friend?

III.

Should thoufand rams in flames expire,
Would thefe his favours buy?

Or oil that should, for holy fire,
Ten thousand streams fupply?

IV.

With trembling hands, and bleeding heart, Should I mine offspring flay:

Would this atone for ill-defert,

And purge my guilt away?

V.

Oh! no, my foul, 'twere fruitless all,
Such victims bleed in vain :

No fatlings from the field or ftall,

Such favours can obtain.

VI.

To men their rights I must allow,

And proofs of kindness give:
To GOD with humble rev'rence bow,
And to his glory live.

VII.

Hands that are clean, and hearts fincere,

He never will difpife:

And chearful duty he'll prefer

To coftly facrifice.
