(1) In order to affert the Inspiration and Authority of the New-Teftament; it is not needful to fuppofe that the Apoftles were continually under the Inspiration of the Holy Spirit, or that they were infpired to write every Word and Syllable therein; for the contrary is evident. It is fufficient to fuppofe, That they were infpired to write and teach all fuch Matters and Truths as were neceffary to the Salvation of Mankind: that they were fo affifted by the Holy Spirit in Preaching andWriting them down, as to be preferved from Error, or Corruption. That this was the Cafe, may be inferred from what the Apoftle here fays concerning the Perfons he had baptized; as firft, that he baptized none but Crifput, and Gaius ģ then upon recollection he fays, that he baptized the Houshold of Stephanas: Befides, fays he, I know not whether I baptized any other. Had the Apoftle in Writing this been under the immediate Infpiration of the holy Spirit, fo as to have the very Words dictated to him, he, probably, would have expreffed himself more abfolutely, and not fo doubtfully as he does. It is moreover obfervable, that the Apoffle in the 7th Chapter of this Epistle, Ver. 25. diftinguishes between what he received of the Lord, and what he gave his own judgment about, as any other wife, and good, and experienced Man might do. The carrying this Matter too far, has done në Service to revealed Religion. See Bishop Tillotson's Sormons, Vol. XII, pag. 102. H

(2) This Place is to be understood comparatively. The Meaning thereof is, I was fent not fo much to baptize those who are already converted; but the great End of my Commiflion is,rather to preach the Go fpel to thofe who are as yet unconverted Baptifm may as well be admi niftred by inferior Minifters, as by me. Thofe who were converted, we e not wrought upon with the Wisdom of Words; that is, not by fuch Rhetorical Difcourfes, as the Heathen Philofophers and wife Men were wont to ufe in order to gain over People to their Opinions, but the Apoftles made ufe of fuch Arguments as were proper to prove the Truth of the Religion they preached; namely, the fupersatural Gifts benowed at that Time on Believers, and the publick Miracles wrought by Jefas Chrift and his Apostles
