Covenants. Hagar, the Bond woman, whofe Name fignifies a Rock, reprefented the Covenant of the Law delivered from Mount Sinai, which gendered, that is, fubje&ed those who were under it, to bondage to that Law; and this anfwered to Jerufalem, or, the Jewish Church, properly speaking, But Sarah, the Freewoman, was a Figure of, and reprefented the fecond Covemant, or the Gospel State, called, Ver. 26. the Jerufalem, which is from aLove. Such Allegories as the Scriptures explain we ought to receive. But we should take care how we entertain fuch allegorical Interpretations as are not, plainly warranted by the holy Scriptures, whether devifed by our felves, or by others. We thould be particularly careful that an Opiion built on an allegorical Senfe be not contrary to other plain Scriptures And however obvious fuch a Senfe may be to us, we ought not to impofe it on others as an undoubted Senfe of Scripture. If the Apoftle had not here unfolded the hidden Meaning of the Hiftory of thefe to Wo men, it had probably been a Secret ftill. The fame may be faid of the brafin Serpent's being a Type of our Lord's being lifted up on the Crofs; of the Pafchal Lamb, and of Jonah's being Types of our Saviour. While we keep to the plain and obvious Sente of Scripture we are fafe, but there may be danger in departing from it.

cry, thou that travaileft not for the defolate hath many more children than fhe which hath an husband. 28. Now we brethren, as Ifaac was, are the children of promife. 29. But as then he that was born after the flesh, perfecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even fo it is now. Neverthelefs, what faith the fcripture? Caft out the bond-womari and her fon: for the fon of the bond-woman fhall not be heir with the fon of the free-woman. 31. So then, brethren, we are not children of the bond-woman, but of the free.
