Mr. William Day has purchased the stallion Ratan; and Mr. Cockshaw, Poynton. Mr. J. Ashton has parted with Fernhill to go to Prussia, and bought Lambton in place of him. Mr. H. Hill has sold Kingstown to the Duke of Beaufort. King of the Gipsies has been bought for Drewe's stable at Ilsley.

The horse-tamer, Mr. Rarey, is at present in France. The following satisfactory letter has been addressed to Messrs. Tattersall :

"Having been made acquainted by Mr. Rarey with his method of subjugating and training the horse, and having witnessed the entire subjugation of four powerful and irritable horses belonging to the royal stables, each near 17 hands high, I am enabled to certify that neither stupefaction by inhalation, nor narcotic, nor any mesmeric influences were resorted to, the means used being knowledge, skilfully applied -the result, perfect control over the animal.

"I have also seen the more advanced state of Mr. Rarey's system. It was exhi bited on a black horse, who had gained for himself the unenviable distinction of being a vicious brute,' now certainly a rare specimen of obedience and submission; indeed, if one could attempt to analyze his feelings, you would imagine he felt his sagacity had been appealed to, and he found it expedient to respond to the appeal; he felt he was conquered, and resistance uselees; but more than all, he felt and knew he had not been injured, hence the fondness, the docility, and, I might almost say, an evident desire to please and be instructed by his very able tutor.

Believing the first step towards education is the submission of your pupil, whether biped or quadruped, and Mr. Rarey's method is so excellent and so applicable for gaining that step with young horses, I think, were it known and adopted, the annoyance of a restive and irritable horse would be seldom met with. "J. H. LANGWORTHY, V.S.H.M.

The business of the month has not been so heavy as might have been expected. Its chief feature has been the support of Adamas for the Chester Cup; and if in anything like his spring form of last season, there is certainly every reason for the fancy. He is most favourably in. Vanity, in John Scott's stable, and Botany, in Joe Dawson's, have a more improving look than any of the others; Blink Bonny's price just

at present being little more than nominal. For the Derby, Cock-adoodle-doo is still in strong voice; the odds against him daily decrease, and there is every appearance of his becoming first favourite. Still Clydesdale is very firm; while Hadji and Ditto are each, according to the glass, getting up. The Two Thousand Guineas threatens to bring out a large field; Clydesdale and Brother to Marchioness have been running, even in anticipation, a fine race for first place, though the Sussex horse has not yet been fairly collared. The Happy Land and Lord of Lorn are also in repute, and Mentmore often spoken of. Mr. Hawke is reported to have refused a strong price for Brother to Marchioness. Might we suggest a name for him-"The Younger Brother."

THE OMNIBUS,

"There he sat, and, as I thought, expounding the law and the prophets, until on drawing a little nearer, I found he was only expatiating on the merits of a brown horse."-BRACEBRIDGE HALL,

Racing Gossip-Mr. Rarey-Shrewsbury Hunter Fair-Meetings of the MonthMr. Davis and Harry King-Mr. Morell's Hounds-Death of HerculesHunting Mems-Our Melton Budget-The Waterloo and Biggar MeetingsSunbeam v. Deacon-Argus's "Racing Photographs "-Our Portrait Gallery.

Lord Derby's accession has made even quite quiet papers come out with all they know in sporting. One has dwelt, in the heat of its jocularity, on his laudable anxiety "after getting a place himself, to win a place in the Derby with his two-year-old Toxophilite ;" and another called attention, in its placard of the day, to the new Ministers "walking on the course," at their re-elections. The racing of the month has been up to the usual mark for March; but little light has as yet been thrown on the Derby, and Happy Land has proved what we said in February, that "he has no staying Derby stamp on him."

Middleham is talking loudly of The Hadji, and say that he is just better than Sister to Ellington; but we are as sceptical about that, as we are about Peck's notion of winning "The Guineas" with Coxwold. Nat went on from Croxton to Whitewall, to taste some of the three-yearolds. It seems still a riddle whether Lord Derby will send "Toxy" for the Guineas. At all events, it is said that he will not oppose Mentmore in the Craven Meeting (is not his lordship going to square it with The Baron, in the Upper House, as well this month?) and not run before the Derby. It was as much as they could do to get some very moderate animals out of his way in his October walk-over. The Peer, however, looks most like the Whitewall horse, now that the Cock-a-doodle-doo folly is over; but we see no reason as yet to desert Clydesdale for either race.

Of general news there is but little. Davis is at Brighton, and his nervous weakness has so far left him, that we hear he can walk a mile; though we fear it will be long before he again becomes the Stentor of the ring. The jockey list still lacks Marlow's name, and for the first time poor Job Marson's, who died, it is said, worth £10,000. Wells, Osborne, and Goater, all declare lighter than we expected; and the hot summer which Earl Rosse predicts will help them amazingly. "Sim" does not intend to go below 8st. 7lbs., and has no regular masters now, while Basham still professes to go to scale 7st.

Mr. Rarey's subscriptions number nearly 400; and now that he seems to be coming right away, Telfer beaten ten lengths for second place, and "Professor Chambers" (query, Professor Ingledue, M.A., who turned Derby prophet in 1850), &c., nowhere, they drop in very fast. It is not true that he failed with Cruiser. He has merely looked at him in his box, and the horse was much calmer than he usually is. In fact, he declined to take charge of him till an injury
