TO THE SECOND EDITION.

I. IN this Edition the syllabic method is continued. There seems no clear and easy principle of distribution of words otherwise. Still the syllabic method has sometimes been misunderstood to require that the italic syllable should uniformly bear the stress or accent in chanting, as e. g. in this passage,

I have walked innocent - ly :

This is simply a misunderstanding. The only real principle is, to chant as you speak. The simplest people know already this mode of accentuation: and, to prevent future misconceptions, the Canticles and Psalms are here marked throughout on this principle: an accent (') is placed to mark any stress of the voice on syllables not italic; and a short sign () to mark where any syllable, whether italic or not, is to be pronounced more lightly and shortly. E. g. the passage above given will stand thus,

I have walked innocent - ly :
