Mercifully direct, O GOD, all my thoughts, words, and actions, throughout this season, to Thy greater glory, and to my own and others' welfare; through JESUS CHRIST Our SAVIOUR. Amen.

PSALM VI. Domine, ne in furore.

O LORD, rebuke me not in Thine indignation neither chasten me in Thy displeasure.

Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am weak: O LORD, heal me, for my bones are vexed.

My soul also is sore troubled : but, LORD, how long wilt Thou punish me? Turn Thee, O LORD, and deliver my soul: O save me for Thy mercy's sake.

For in death no man remembereth Thee: and who shall give Thee thanks in the pit?

I am weary of my groaning; every night wash I my bed and water my couch with my tears.

My beauty is gone for very trouble : and worn away because of all mine enemies.

Away from me, all ye that work vanity : for the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping.

The LORD hath heard my petition: the LORD will receive my prayer.

All mine enemies shall be confounded,

and sore vexed: they shall be turned back and put to shame suddenly.

Glory be to the FATHER, &c.
As it was in the beginning, &c.

FOR EVERY THURSDAY UNTIL
PASSION SUNDAY.

46

My sin is ever before me."

LORD, have mercy.
CHRIST, have mercy.

LORD, have mercy.

O GOD, Who wouldest not the death of a sinner,

Who calledst Adam after his fall to acknowledge his guilt,

Who forgavest the sins of Thy disobedient people,

Who savedst Jonah, when he called upon Thee,

Who sparedst the Ninevites, when they repented,

Who broughtest David to confess his fault,

Who sparedst Ahab when he humbled himself,

Who heardest Manasseh when he repented,

Our FATHER, &c.

Have mercy upon me.

A Prayer of S. Bernard for Pardon of Sins.

O LORD JESU CHRIST, I Thy unworthy servant, calling to mind the bitter grief which Thou didst endure to save me from my sins, do grieve for having so grieved Thee; and together with all such as mourn and are truly sorry for their sins, and seek after Thee in truth, I confess to Thee all my sins, the evil deeds which I have done, the good deeds I have left undone, even as Thou knowest them all, their number, their measure, their weight. Woe! woe! is me for the days of my life which I have lost by offending Thee, my Glory, by falling away from Thee my chief Good, and by leading others also to fall with me.

Now, therefore, O LORD, accept, I pray Thee, what may yet remain to me of my wretched life, and for the years which I have already lost by losing sight of Thee; my broken and contrite heart, O GOD, do not Thou despise. My days have departed and withered away without fruit.

cannot recall them. Oh, grant me to remember them in the bitterness of my soul.

O LORD, the deep of my wretchedness crieth out to the depth of Thy mercy. O,

Thou Who hast mercy on all, Who hatest nothing that Thou hast made, and Who dost hide away the sins of those who truly repent, grant that the fountain of Thy mercy may never be dried up against me by reason of my sins.

It is Thine, O LORD, to forgive sins; pity me now in the time of pity and of grace, and grant me while there is yet time so to amend my life, that I may obtain Thy blessing, and that in the Day of Account the word of cursing destroy me not.

Make me, O LORD, to forsake those sins which most easily beset me, and to do works well pleasing unto Thee; and grant me by Thy help to turn from the evil of my ways, and with all my heart to turn to Thee, and to do Thy holy will.

I pray Thee by Thyself, grant unto me the pardon of all my sins, negligences and ignorances. Oh! destroy me not in mine iniquities, nor be Thou angry with me for ever. O LORD JESU CHRIST, Whose property is always to have mercy and to forgive, Who camest not to destroy, but to save, -not to condemn the world, but that we through Thee might have life; O Thou, Who hast paid that which we owed, and for the sins which we have committed hast made atonement; I pray Thee, for Thy mercy's sake, to grant unto me, that Thy

Cross and Passion may abound to my salvation; and by the mystery of Thy most precious Body and Blood, which is daily offered to Thee in the Church for the salvation of the faithful, wherein Thou art in a wonderful way both Sacrifice and Priest; grant me, unworthy though I am of the least mercy, Thy pardon and grace here, and eternal rest and glory hereafter.

Thine eyes did see my substance yet being imperfect; but in Thy love, Thou art merciful and ever ready to be intreated for sin; impute not, I pray Thee, my sins unto me for punishment. Oh, let me not be blotted out of the Book of Life, but by virtue of Thy precious Passion, grant me a portion in Thine everlasting kingdom.

O LORD, I pray Thee, let the thought of my weakness move Thee to have mercy; Thou knowest whereof I am made, yet forasmuch as Thou hast not set man on the earth in vain, O preserve me, the work of Thy love; let not Thy labour, nor Thy precious Blood-shedding have been in vain for me.

O Thou, Who dost cleanse from sin, grant that cleansed from the defilement of my sins, and enlightened in soul, I may know Thee by the eye of faith; and knowing Thee, may my soul long after Thee, till at last by a happy death, I may come
