Parse the following sentences according to the method above explained. Human affairs are subject to continual fluctuation, altering their appearance every moment, and passing into some new form. A wise man will desire no more than what he may get justly, use soberly, and live upon contentedly. None more impatiently suffer injuries than they who are most forward in doing them. If men of eminence are exposed to censure on one hand, they are as much liable to flattery on the other. Passions are winds to urge us o'er the wave; Reason the rudder to direct and save. The foregoing analysis enables us to comprise all the main principles of punctuation in a few simple rules. i. The subject, predicate, object, and simple adjuncts of a sentence should not be separated from each other by any point whatever:— Henry marched his army boldly into France. ii. Subordinate sentences and participial clauses should be separated by a comma : When the army disappeared, the men, thinking themselves safe, came out of their entrenchments. iii. Co-ordinate sentences should be separated by a semicolon: Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted. iv. When a larger division than the semicolon is required in the members of a sentence to make the sense apparent, a colon is used, as, a. When a number of subordinate sentences have reference to one common apodosis : That we should be upheld by the power of God; that we should daily live on his bounty; that we should owe all our joys to his care, and yet be unmindful of his goodness: is contrary to all the principles of truth and duty. b. When a co-ordinate sentence is employed as a distinct proposition, without any connecting particle. All men are mortal: even the youngest are exposed to this lot. v. When a sentence terminates, it should be indicated by a full stop. REMARKS. 1. In contracted sentences the collateral subjects, predicates, objects, or adjuncts, should be separated from each other by a comma. cases of punctuation may be easily reduced to one of the above rules. As the rules of punctuation really depend upon the connexion of the thoughts in a passage, the comma may be dropped in the case of subordinate sentences, and the semicolon changed into a comma in that of co-ordinate sentences, where even the connexion of thought is unusually close.
