fet in oppofition to falvation, and means utter ruin. Paul fays, Heb. x. 39, "But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the faving of the foul." Here the oppofite of perdition is the faving of the foul; if the foul is not faved, it is loft ;if it does not live by faith, it must die and go into perdition. Judas is called the fon of PERDITION. John

xvii. 12,

"And, none of them is loft but the son of

perdition, that the fcripture might be fulfilled.” Chrift fays, Good were it for that man if he had not been born. Paul fays, "But they that will be rich, fall into temptation, and a fnare, and into many foolish and hurtful lufts, which drown men in deftruction and perdition. When will this perdition or utter ruin take place on the wicked? At the day of judgment. 2 Pet. iii. 7, "But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the fame word are kept in ftore, referved unto fire against the day of judgment, and perdition of ungodly men." Obferve, the word perdition fignifies utter ruin, or eternal death: this is to take place at the day of judgment, and is what will certainly come on all ungodly men. How can the Univerfalist come forward and promise falvation to the wicked, when the fcriptures promise them perdition at the laft day!! The only reafon why people fincerely believe that the wicked will live eternally in mifery is, because they have been brought up to believe it, and never have read the Bible to fee what it fays of them.. I acknowledge this is the way I have done till within a few

months.

6. DAMNATION is a word ufed in the New-Teftament to defcribe the final end of the wicked.

This word fignifies condemnation, or to be excluded from all favour from God forever. Jefus firft used this word, and applied it to the fcribes and pharifees. Matt. xxiii. 14, "Wo unto you, fcribes and pharifees, hypocrites; for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer; therefore ye fhall receive the greater DAMNATION." Who is in danger of this damnation ? Those who blafpheme against the Holy Ghoft, and all who do not believe the gofpel. Mark iii. 29, "But he

that shall blafpheme against the Holy Ghoft, hath never forgivnefs, but is in danger of eternal DAMNATION. Chap. xvi. 16, "He that believeth not fhall be DAMNED." This is not the DAMNATION of this world; but the DAMNATION of hell. Matt.xxiii. 33, "Ye ferpents, ye generation of vipers! how can ye efcape the DAMNATION of hell." This DAMNATION will not be till after the refur. rection. Jefus fays, John v. 28, 29, "Marvel not at this; for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in their graves fhall hear his voice, and fhall come forth; they that have done good unto the refurrection of life, and they that have done evil unto the refurrection of DAMNATION." This fhews when this DAMNATION Will' be; at the fame time when the fecond death, deftruction, and perdition comes on the ungodly, fo that they fhall utterly perish. It is evident from what Peter has faid, that it has not yet come, though it haftens upon them. 2 Pet. ii. 3, "Whofe judgment now of a long time ling

ereth not, and their DAMNATION flumbereth not." Paul tells us who will fhare in this DAMNATION after the refurrection. 2 Theff. ii. 11, 12, And for this caufe God fhall fend them strong delufion, that they fhould believe a lie; that they all might be DAMNED, who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteoufnefs." This agrees with what Chrift fays, "He that believeth not fhall be damned."

This DAMNATION will be juft, because those who will receive it,commit a crime which merits the fecond death. Rom. iii. 8, Whofe damnation is juft."

7. CONDEMNATION is another word ufed in the NewTeftament to describe the last state of the wicked: it fignifies, "The fentence by which any one is doomed to punishment." It means a declaring a perfon guilty and deferving death for his crime.

Jefus fays he came not to condemn the world. Why? Because they were already condemned. "He that believeth not is condemned already; because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the CONDEMNATION, that light is come into the world, and men loved darknefs rather than light,

John iii. 18, 19, Every

because their deeds were evil." unbeliever is condemned or fentenced to die for his own crime, which is unbelief: but that fentence is not execu ted, and will not be until the laft day. Jude fays, ver. 4, "For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this CONDEMNATION; ungodly men turning the grace of our God into lafcivioufnefs, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jefus Chrift." We are told what the CONDEMNATION is, which ungodly men are ordained to; and when this CONDEMNATION fhall come upon them.

The time when they fhall feel this CONDEMNATION is, when "the Lord cometh with ten thousand of his faints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of their ungodly deeds which they have ungodlily committed, and of all their hard fpeeches which ungodly finners have spoken against him.” See ver. 14, 15. We are told what this CONDEMNATION means which will be executed at the coming of the Lord. - Verfes 11, 12, 13, Wo unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perifhed in the gainfaying of Core. These are spots in your feafts of charity, when they feaft with you, feeding themfelves without fear 9 clouds they are without water; carried about of winds; trees whofe fruit withereth, without fruit twice dead, plucked up by the roots; raging waves of the fea, foaming out their own fhame; wandering ftars, to whom is referved the blackness of darkness forever." This is a defcription of the CONDEMNATION of ungodly men. fentence paffed on them is thus defcribed, when executed at the day of judgment. It is faid they fhall perish ;that they are trees twice dead. They must be alive twice, or they could not die twice. They were once dead, when they died and were buried; then at the refurrection they will be alive; after they are judged they will die again. This will be the SECOND DEATH; this is their end. When a tree is twice dead, there is no hope of it, it is caft into the fire. Can all this take place upon an ungodly man, and he be in existence afterwards? No.

The

Can all this take place, and then the ungodly be reftored after they are burnt, up and made happy? This cannot be.

8. VENGEANCE is another word used to describe the final state of the wicked. This word fignifies punish-? ment in a most awful manner, without any kind of pity or mercy. It is the fame as to avenge.

This is to take place on the wicked at the last day, 2 Theff. i. 8, "In flaming fire taking VENGEANCE ON them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jefus Chrift." This VENGEANCE means everlasting deftruction from the prefence of the Lord." See ver. 9. If the wicked live forever, they will be in the prefence of God; but it is from the prefence of the Lord, because they will die to live no more.

9. WRATH is a word frequently used to defcribe the i final state of the wicked. This word fignifies fiery rage, or anger. It is described by a devouring fire. It means to confume, or devour without any limits or bounds; utterly to destroy. David compares God's wrath to a devouring fire.

Pfal. lxxxix. 46, "How long, Lord, wilt thou hide thyfelf? Shall thy WRATH burn like fire? Ezekiel xxi. 31, "And I will pour out mine indignation upon thee, I will blow against thee in the fire of my WRATH.' Chap. xxii. 31, "I have confumed them with the fire of 1 my WRATH. These places plainly fhow that wrath is ! compared to a confuming, devouring fire. Let us now fee how this word is used to describe the end of the wicked. When John the baptift begun to preach to the wicked, he told them of the WRATH to come on the ungodly. Matt. iii. 7, "O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the WRATH to come?" In ver. 10, he tells what this wrath to come is; "Therefore ! every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and caft into the fire." This is called WRATH to come, because it will not be felt in the full extent of it, until the last day. Every unbeliever is under this WRATH, or expofed to it. John iii. 36, “And he that believeth not the Son fhall not fee life, but the WRATH of

God abideth on him." Every child of Adam as an unbeliever, is a child of wrath to come, and expofed to it. Eph. ii. 3, "And were by nature children of WRATH, even as others." 1 Theff. i. 1o, "And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jefus, which delivered us from the WRATH to come.' It is generally thought that this will always be wrath to come; but it will not; for, there will be a time when this wrath will come on the ungodly.

"But

The day of WRATH is appointed. Rom. ii. 5, after thy hardness and impenitent heart, treasureft up unto thyfelf WRATH against the day of wrath, and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who will render to every man according to his deeds." This day of WRATH means the day of judgment; this will be at the refurrection. Rev. xi. 18," And the nations were angry, and thy WRATH is come, and the time of the dead that they should be judged, and that thou fhouldeft give reward unto thy fervants the prophets, and to the faints, and them that fear thy name, fmall and great, and fhouldest destroy them which deftroy the earth." This WRATH is to deftroy the wicked, which means to make an end of them; even of the foul and body. This agrees with what Paul has faid, Rom. ix. 22, "What if God, willing to fhew his WRATH, and to make his power known, endured with much long-fuffering, the veffels of wrath fitted to deftruction." There is no language plainer than this, concerning the end of the wicked. The prophets have spoken of the wrath which will come on the ungodly at the laft day in a moft folemn manner. Job xxi 20, 30, "His eyes fhall fee his deftruction, and he fhall drink of the WRATH of the Almighty; they fhall be brought forth to the day of WRATH."

IO. CONSUME is a word ufed to defcribe the end of the wicked. This word fignifies to wafte, deftroy, or make an end, to burn up.

Heb. xii. 29, "For our God is a confuming fire." Job. fpeaking of the wicked fays, Job. xx. 26, "A fire not blown fhall CONSUME him."
