prodigal, Luke xv. Though I was lost yet now by the blessing of thy grace, I am found again. Verse 32. O welcome thy lost sheep, when it returns home. Verse 4, 5, 6. And let there be joy in heaven on the repentance of me a lost sinner. Verse 7. 10. "O let the blood "of Jesus cleanse me from all my sins." 1 John i. 17. Let his intercession for me in thy presence make my peace, and appease thy wrath. Shut not thine ears against the voice of his blood, nor be 'deaf to his mediation; but hear him, my advocate for my pardon. And let me

find the forgiveness of all my sins, that thy troubled and trembling servant may have peace, and thou mayest be sought unto and found, and served by sinners, who will return unto thee, in hopes of thy grace and pardoning mercy, through Jesus Christ our Lord and only Saviour. Amen.

A Prayer which may be used by a notorious sinner, who has deferred his repentance till within a short time before his death.

Almighty

From Dr. Stonhouse's "Sick Man's Friend.". Page 193. Edit. 1788.

Almighty God and merciful Father of the spirits of all flesh, graciously hear, I beseech thee, the penitent supplication of a miserable sinner, deeply sensible of his guilt and wretchedness, and now humbly desirous of casting himself on thy mercy through thy blessed Son Jesus Christ, who by his bitter sufferings and death hath atoned thy awful justice, and opened a new and living way to thy favour in behalf of all such, as with truly contrite hearts desire to return to thee.

I have sinned with grievous aggravations; I have not only offended thy justice, and dared thy avenging power, but have abused thy goodness, slighted the gracious calls of thy providence and gospel, and shamefully indulged the corruptions of my own heart, to the great dishonour of thy name, and the injury of my fellow creatures.

My guilt is too great for me to express, and such as no created power can remove, and I confess the righteousness of the sentence which appoints me to suffer from thy justice the pains of everlasting punish

ment.

But, O Lord most merciful, thou hast graciously declared, "there is forgiveness

with

"with thee;"-" that thou desirest not "the death of a sinner, but that he "should repent and live;"-that thy blessed Son Jesus Christ not only died for sinners, even the chief of sinners, but also that he now liveth at thy right hand to make intercession for them, that they might be brought to repentance; and so returning unto thee with unfeigned sorrow for their past offences, with a lively faith in Him, and with a sincere endeavour after obedience to thy will, might be forgiven and admitted to the enjoyment of eternal life.

Encouraged by this most gracious goodness, I would fain look up to thy offended majesty with some hope, even in these last moments of a very sinful life. O Lord, most merciful God of salvation, cast me not away from thy presence, I beseech thee, but for thy mercy's sake in Christ Jesus have compassion on me; support me in the awful hour of death, and admit me into thy blissful presence in the kingdom of glory, there to adore and praise thee world without end. Amen.

N. B. This Prayer is followed by another to the same effect; which may be used either with or by a notorious sinner: both which may be used occasionally by or with a condemned malefactor. G

¶ A Prayer for trust in God in sickness.

From "A New

tions." P. 272.

O Almighty God, our Manual of Devo- only help in time of trouble, look with pity and compassion upon me, now under thine afflicting hand. Be thou my stay and confidence under all my sorrows and afflictions, and suffer me not to sink under the weight of them, through any dejections or faintness of spirit.

Give me such an entire trust and confidence in thy mercy, through the merits of my dear Redeemer, that I may cast all my care upon thee, and with chearfulness commit myself into thy hands, assuredly believing that all things shall work together for good to them that love thee. And, O Lord, grant that I may be found such an one, as through thy great mercy may be entitled to the benefit of thy gracious promises. Make me willing and ready to yield to thy wisdom, and to prefer thy will before my own; to be contented to bear what thou pleasest, and to be eased of my burden in thy time, which is always best..

But, O Lord, however thou art pleased to deal with my body, yet spare my soul,

I beseech thee, and deliver it from the bitter pains of eternal death. O take me not out of this world, till thou art reconciled unto me, and hast fitted me in some measure for thy heavenly kingdom. ref Grant, O Lord, that whether I live, I may live unto thee; or whether I die, I may die unto thee; so that living and dying I may be thine through Jesus Christ, my ever blessed Saviour and Redeemer. Amen.
