HOPKINS HALL,

BALTIMORE, April 11th, 1882.

The MEDICAL AND CHIRURGIGAL FACULTY OF MARYLAND met in Annual Convention at 12 o'clock M. Convention was called to order by the President, Dr. Frank Donaldson. The roll was called, and sixty members answered to their

names.

On motion, the reading of minutes of last meeting was dispensed with. Resignations of membership in the Faculty were read from Drs. D. I. McKew, W. G. G. Willson, Alan P. Smith, Grafton Tyler, and J. M. Smith. On motion, their resignations were accepted.

The President delivered his Annual Address, which was referred to the Committee on Publication.

The Report of the Corresponding Secretary, Dr. J. E. Michael, was read and accepted.

The Report of the Treasurer, Dr. J. Gilman, was read and accepted, and referred to the Executive Committee to audit.

The Executive Committee reported through their Chairman, Dr. H. P. C. Wilson; the report accepted.

The Board of Examiners for Western Shore reported through their Chairman, Dr. S. C. Chew, that the following names were presented for membership, and unanimously recommended by the Board:

Drs. W. B. Platt, W. B. Canfield, Whitfield Winsey, W. H. H. Campbell, Theodore Cooke, Chas. W. Chancellor, I. Bermann, J. D. Arnold, Chas. H. Riley, J. N. Mackenzie, Oliver Tydings, Nicholas L. Dashiell, Jr., E. B. Price.

Report of the Library Committee read by Chairman, Dr. I. E. Atkinson, and accepted.

Report of the Publication Committee read by Chairman, Dr. W. G. Regester, and accepted.

Dr. Gilman moved a suspension of the Rules, so as to take up a proposed amendment to the Constitution, that is, the amendment proposed by Dr. Atkinson, at the last Annual Meeting, in relation to increased assessment of members. On motion of Dr. J. C. Thomas, the amendment was made the special order for to-morrow, 12th inst., immediately after the reading of the papers from the Biological Department of the Johns Hopkins University; and on motion of Dr. C. H. Ohr, the Treasurer was requested to give a detailed account of the expenses and collections of the Faculty for the past four years.

Dr.W.F. A. Kemp, Chairman of Committee on Memoirs, read Report of the Committee. Dr. T. S. Latimer, as per request of the Faculty, read a memoir of Dr. E. L. Howard, and Dr. Christopher Johnston, Jr., read a memoir of Dr. Samuel P. Smith. On motion, the reports were accepted.

The Committee on Ethics made no report.

The Curator, Dr. H. S. Bowie, read his report, which was accepted.

The Section on Surgery, Dr. L. McL. Tiffany, Chairman, made report, supplemented by a paper from Dr. G. H. Boyland. On motion, the report was accepted.

On motion, Faculty adjourned to meet to-morrow at 12 o'clock.

F. Donaldson, in the chair. On motion, the calling of the roll was dispensed with.

Minutes of last session were

The regular order of business, the reading of papers from the Biological Section of the Johns Hopkins University, was then taken up.

Mr. W. H. Howell read a paper on "Observations upon the form of the pulse wave, and the mean arterial pressure in a dog with open ductus arteriosus.” The paper was, on motion, accepted and referred to the Committee on Publication.

Mr. F. Donaldson, Jr., read a paper on "The influence of increase of venous and arterial pressure upon the cardio inhibitory action of the pneumogastric nerve." On motion, the paper was accepted and referred to the Publication Committee.

Mr. H. H. Donaldson read a paper on "Influence of Digitaline on the work done by the heart." On motion, the paper was accepted and referred to the Publication. Committee.

The special order, viz. the consideration of the amendment to the Constitution, proposed at last Annual Meeting by Dr. I. E. Atkinson, was then taken up. Dr. Gilman, in compliance with motion of Faculty, read a detailed account of the collections and disbursements for the past four years.

The proposed amendment was thoroughly and fully discussed by many members. Dr. Regester proposed as an amendment, to substitute the word four, instead of five, as

the amount to be appropriated to the Library Committee, which amendment having been accepted by Dr. Atkinson, the amendment to the Constitution, as amended, was adopted by a vote of 45 ayes to 12 nays. The amendment, as adopted, is as follows:

ART. 10. For the purpose of defraying the expense of publishing the Transactions, of increasing the efficiency of the Library, and of meeting the incidental expenses, each member of the Faculty, residing in the City of Baltimore, shall be assessed eight dollars annually, of which four dollars shall be appropriated to the Library Committee. The members residing in the counties shall be assessed three dollars annually, of which two dollars shall be appropriated to the Library Committee. These assessments must be paid within thirty days after each Annual Meeting. It shall be competent for the Faculty to levy additional assessments if the emergencies of the treasury should require it.

The election of members being next in order, the following, recommended by the Board of Examiners, were unanimously elected members of the Faculty:

W. B. Platt, W. B. Canfield, Whitfield Winsey, W. H. H. Campbell, Theodore Cooke, I. Bermann, J. D. Arnold, Chas. H. Riley, J. N. Mackenzie, Oliver Tydings, E. B. Price, N. L. Dashiell, Jr. On motion of Dr. Conrad, Dr. C. W. Chancellor's name was referred for reconsideration to the Board of Examiners.

The President announced that Dr. A. M. Fauntleroy, of Virginia, would deliver the Annual Address at 12 M. to-morrow, and invited the members to meet that gentleman at his house between 8 and 10 P. M. of the same day. On motion, adjourned to meet at 12 M. to-morrow.

The Annual Oration being next in order, the Chair introduced Dr. A. M. Fauntleroy, of Virginia, who delivered an able address upon "The Reciprocal Influence of Morbid Physical and Psychical Conditions of the Nervous System."

On motion of Dr. Tiffany the cordial thanks of the Faculty were tendered Dr. Fauntleroy for his interesting address, and a copy requested for publication.

Dr. S. C. Chew, Chairman of Board of Examiners, proposed the name of Dr. A. M. Fauntleroy for honorary membership in the Faculty, to which position he was unanimously elected.

Reports from Sections being next in order, Dr. Thomas B. Evans, Chairman, read the report from the Section on Practice of Medicine, which was accepted and referred to the Committee on Publication.

The Section on Obstetrics and Gynecology reported. through Dr. Thomas Opie, Chairman. The report was, on motion, accepted and referred to the Publication Committee.

The Section on Materia Medica and Chemistry, through Dr. John R. Uhler, reported. The report was accepted and referred to the Publication Committee.

Dr. John Morris, Chairman of Section on Sanitary Science, read a report from the Section, with a paper on "Infant Mortality; or, Diphtheria endemic in the 17th Ward of the City of Baltimore," and stated that papers from the Section would be presented by Dr. W. M. Kemp and Dr. W. Chew Van Bibber.
