A Babylonian Scribe writing on a clay cylinder.

NCIENT Babylon knew not pens, ink, and paper.
Their writings, in addition to the universal method

of carving permanent records on stone, were made on clay cylinders, the letters being incised with a stylus. The cylinder was afterwards baked like a brick. Excavations on the site of Babylon have brought to light hundreds of these cylinders, recording such mundane things as a washing list and tradesmen's accounts.
