THE CREED OF ST. ATHANASIUS. ‡

Quicunque vult.

37

Tone 8. C. (1.) p. 15. † (2.) p. 15.

WHOSOEVER will be { sáv-ed: before all things it is necessary that he hold the Catholic Faith. † Which Faith, except every one do keep whole and unde- fil-ed: without doubt he shall perish { ever-lasting-ly.

And the Catholic Faith is this: that we worship one God in Trinity,* and Trinity in { Uni-ty.

[ocr errors]

Neither confounding the Per-sons: nor dividing the Sub-stance.

[ocr errors]

For there is one Person of the Father,* another of the Son and another of the Holy Ghost.

:

But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost,* is all one: the Glory equal, the Majesty co-e- {ter-nal.

Such as the Father is,* such is the { Són: and such is the Holy Ghost.

To be sung on the following Festivals:-Christmas Day, the Epiphany, S. Matthias, Easter Day, Ascension Day, WhitSunday, and Trinity Sunday; S. Andrew, S. John Baptist, S. James, S. Bartholomew, S. Matthew, and SS. Simon and Jude.

Tone 8. C. (1.) p. 15. † (2.) p. 15.

The Father uncreate,* the Son uncre- {ate: and the Holy Ghost uncre- {ate.

The Father incomprehensible,* the Son incompre-hen-sible: and the Holy Ghost incompre- { hensi-ble.

The Father eternal,* the Son e- ter-nal: and the Holy Ghost e- { ter-nal.

And yet they are not three e- ter-nals: but } one e- {ter-nal.

As also there are not three incomprehensibles,* * nor three uncre- {at-ed: but one uncreated,* and one incomprehensi-ble.

So likewise the Father is Almighty,* the Son Al- migh-ty: and the Holy Ghost Al- migh-ty. And yet they are not three Al- { migh-ties: but one Al- migh-ty.

}

(f) So the Father is God,* the Son is God : and the Holy Ghost is { God.

And yet they are not

God.

three Gods: (1) but one

So likewise the Father is Lord,* the Son { Lord: and the Holy Ghost Lord.

And yet not three Lords: (f) but one Lord.

For like as we are compelled by the Christian { Ver-ity to acknowledge every Person by himself to be God and { Lord; {

:

So are we forbidden by the Catholic Re- { li-gion to say, There be three Gods, or three { Lords.

none:

The Father is made of none: neither created, nor be-got-ten.

The Son is of the Father alone: not made, nor created, but be- { got-ten.

The Holy Ghost is of the Father and of the { Son neither made, nor created, nor begotten,* but pro-ceed-ing.

So there is one Father, not three Fathers;* one Son, not three Sons: one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts.

And in this Trinity none is afore or after { o-ther: none is greater or less than an{o-ther. But the whole three persons are co-eternal to- { geth-er and co- } e-qual.

So that in all things, as is afore- { said: the Unity in Trinity, and the Trinity in Unity,* is to be { worship-ped.

(f) He therefore that will be saved: must thus think of the Trini-ty. }

Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting

sal-va-tion that he also believe rightly* the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

[ocr errors]

(f) For the right Faith is,* that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God,* is God and { Man;

God, of the substance of the Father,* begotten before the worlds: and Man, of the substance of his Mother, born { in the world

Perfect God, and perfect Man: of a reasonable soul and human flesh sub- sist-ing.

Equal to the Father,* as touching his God

head and inferior to the Father,* as touching

:

his { Man-hood.

[ocr errors]

Who, although he be God and Mán: yet he is not two, but one { Christ;

One;* not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh but by taking of the Manhood into { God. One altogether; not by confusion of Substance but by unity of Per-son.

}

For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one { Mán: so God and Man is one { Christ;

+ Who suffered for our sal-va-tion: descended

into hell,* (f) rose again the third day from the { dead.

(f) He ascended into Heaven,* he sitteth on the right hand of the Father, God Almigh-ty: from whence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

[ocr errors]

† At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bo-dies: and shall give account for their own { works.

† And they that have done good shall go into life ever-last-ing: and they that have done evil into everlasting fire.

(f) This is the Catholic Faith: which except a man believe faithfully,* he cannot be sav-ed. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;

*

As it was in the beginning,* is now, and ever { shall be world without end. { A-men.
