Advices from GREAT BRITAIN.

HE Preparations that are every where making Abroad, has given his Majefty Occasion to think that it would be for the Intereft of Great Britain to increase her Naval Forces; and that his Majesty might be the better enabled to do it,he fent on the 24th of the Month the following Meffage to the honourable House of Commons.

IS Majefty having nothing more at Heart, than an earnest Defire to fecure to bis own Snbjects the full and free Enjoyment of their Trade and Navigation, and in the best manner to prevent and fruftrate fuch Defigns as have been form'd against the particular Intereft of this Nation, and the general Peace of Europe, bas found it necessary not only to augment bis Maritime Force, but to concert fuch other Meafures as may moft effectually conduce to thefe defirable Ends; and as thefe Services will require fome extraordinary Expence, His Majefty hopes be fhall be enabled, by the Affiftance of Parliament, to increase the Number of Seamen already voted and granted for the Service of this Tear, and to enter into, and make good fuch Engagements, as the Circumftances and Exigency of Affairs may require.

On the 26th the whole Houle waited upon his Majesty with an Addrefs, That he will be pleas'd to make fuch an Addition to the Number of Seamen already voted, and to concert fuch other Meafures, as his Majefty fhall in his great Wisdom think will best conduce to the Security of the Trade and Navigation of this Kingdom, and to the Prefervation of the Peace of Europe; and to affure his Majefty, That that House will effectually provide for and make good all fuch Expences and Engagements, as fhall be made for obtaining thefe great and defirable Ends.

To which Addrefs his Majefty was pleas'd to give the following moft gracious Answer.

Gentlemen,

I Return you my Thanks for this Loyal and Affectionate Address; and you may be affured, Ifball make no other Ufe of the Confidence you repofe in me, but for preferving the General Tranquillity, and in Support of the Trade, Honour, and Intereft of my People.

Pursuant to thefe Refolutions we are told, that Eight more Men of War will be fitted out; and of thofe already equipp❜d, a Squadron of 7 Men of War is order'd for the Weft-Indies under the Command of Admiral Hofier; a Squadron of 21 Men of War and two Firefhips is order'd for the Baltick under the Command of Sir Charles Wager Vice-Admiral, and Sir George Walton RearAdmiral

Admiral of the Red. The Squadron to be appointed for the Mediterranean will be commanded by Sir John Jennings.

The firft of this Month being the Birth-day of her Royal Highnefs the Princess of Wales, who then enter'd into the 44th Year of her Age, there was a very fplendid Appearance of Nobility and Perfons of Distinction at Leicester Houfe, and fo numerous that the Drawing-Room could not hold 'em all. The Park and Tower Guns were fired, and at Night there was a Ball at St. James's. The South-Sea and India Companies have advertis'd, that their Bonds, which became due the 26th and 31ft of this Month, fhould from that Day bear an Intereft of 5 per Cent..

Deaths of Perfons of Note.

N the 5th, about five in the Evening, died the moft High, Puiffant and Noble Prince Evelyn Pierpoint, Duke and Earl of Kingston, Marquis of Dorchefter, Viscount Newark, and Baron Pierpoint of Holme Pierpoint, Lord Privy-Seal, Lord Lieutenant. and Cuftos Rotulorum of the County of Wilts, one of his Majesty's moft Honourable Privy-Council, and Knight Companion of the most noble Order of the Garter. His Grace defcended from Robert de Pierpoint, who came into England with William the Conqueror. There were feveral valiant Men of this Family, who did their King and Country excellent Service. His late Grace was but the third Son; his two Elders, Robert and William, were fucceffively Earls of Kingston, but died without Iffue; to them fucceeded Evelyn, who was created Marquis of Dorchefter, then Duke of Kingften. He was twice married, firft to the Lady Mary, Daughter to William. Fielding Earl of Denbigh, by whom he had Iffue one Son and three Daughters; Lady Mary married to Wortley Montague (Son and Heir of Sidney Wortley Montague, fecond Son of Edward firft Earl of Sandwich;) the Lady Evelyn married to John Lord Gower, and the Lady Frances married to the late Earl of Mar, with whom fhe is now abroad. By the fame Wife his Grace had one Son, named William, who dying in the Year 1713, left Iffue one Son (now Duke of Kingston) and one Daughter. His fecond Wife was the Lady Elizabeth Ariana Bentink, Sifter by half Blood to the prefent Duke of Portland.

On the 12th died Sir John Ward, Knt. and Alderman of Candle-wick Ward, lately Lord Mayor of this City, a Member of the Houfe of Commons, and one of the Directors of the Bank.

On the 14th died at his Lodgings at Knights-Bridge, David Graham of Orchell, Efq; Knight of the Shire of Perth in North Britain.

The fame Day died at his Houfe in Pall-Mall, John van de Bende, Efq; a Gentleman of a vaft Eftate, whofe only Daughter married the late Marquis of Annandale.

On the 15th died at Aftrop, Dr. Jofeph Hunt, Mafter of Baliol College in Oxford.

The fame Week died at Snape in Yorkshire, the Honourable Charles Cecil, Efq;,

On the 17th at Night died Mary Countess of Dalboufie, Mother to the prefent Lord Bellenden. She was Daughter of Henry Earl. Drogheda of the Kingdom of Ireland, and of Alice Daughter of William Ld Spencer,Baron of Wormleighton in theCounty of Warwick.

The fame Day died at Walton in Warwickshire, the Lady of Sir Charles Mordaunt, Bart. the only Daughter of the late John Conyers, Efq; Barrister at Law.

Lately died the honourable Henry Boscawen, Son to the Lord Viscount Falmouth.

On the 19th died at his Seat at Stoke Charity, Sir Peter Mew,. Chancellor of the Diocefe of Winchester, and a Reprefentative in Parliament for the Borough of Christ-Church in Hampshire.

On the 21ft died at his Lodgings at Hammersmith, Sir John Chefter, Bart. who had enjoy'd that Honour but a Month, his Father dying in February. 'Tis faid he has left his Lady with Child. The fame Day died in the 90th Year of his Age, Dr. Daniel Whitby, Chantor, Canon and Prebendary of Sarum.

On the 26th died at his House at Whiteball of a Quinfey in his Throat, Sir John Vanbrugh, Knt. Comptroller-General of his Majefty's Works, and Surveyor of the Gardens and Waters; the former a Place of 300, the latter of 400l. per Annum. He had alfo been Clarencieux King at Arms, but had not long fince difpofed. of that Office. He was a good Arcitect, and a good Poet, and has left fix Comedies behind him; the Relapfe, the Provok'd Wife, Afop, the Confederacy, the falfe Friind, and the Miftake; all which,, except the laft, are ftill Stock-Plays at either the one or the other of the Houfes, and two of 'em are play'd at both. He was writing another Comedy, entitled, the Provok'd Husband; in which he defign'd to have expos'd the fashionable Vice of Gaming, but died without finishing this Piece, to the great Mortification of all Lovers of Wit and Comedy. He had married the Daughter of Colonel Tarborough, and by her has left Iffue one Son.

On the 27th died Sir Jeremiah Murden, one of the Sheriffs for this prefent Year of the City of London, and County of Middlefex.

Lately died at his Seat in Warwickshire, the Lady of Sir Francis Edwardss of Shrewsbury, Bart. She has left no iffue..

On the 29th. died, of the Small Pox (the 9th day after their coming out) the Lady of the Right Honourable the Lord VifcoountTownshend, eldedSifter of the Right Honourable Sir Robert Walpole; she had issue 13 Children, of whom nine are now Living.

ELECTIONS.

N our laft we mentioned, that the Election of a Member for Chipping 1 Wycombe had been declared void; on the 3d Inftant they went to Polling there again; the Candidates were the fame, the Honourable Charles Collyer, Efq. and Henry Waller Efq; the former was again return'd, and the latter a gain complained of an undue Election. After a full hearing, the Mayor of Chipping Wycombe was committed to Newgate,for arbitrary and illegal Practices in that Election; another Perfon was taken into Cuftody of the Serjant at Arms, and Mr. Waller was declared duly Elected.

His Majefty having been pleased to order his Conge d'Elire to be fent to ths Dean and Chapter of Chefter, for Electing the Reverend Mr. Peploe Bishop of that See; the Election was accordingly made on the 4th of the Month.

On the 15th came on the Election of an Alderman for Candlewick Ward in the Room of the late Sir John Ward, when John Thompfen Efq; was unanimoufly chosen by the Inhabitants, who would fuffer no other to be put up in Oppofition to him.

On the 3 ift came on the Election of a Sheriff for the City of London and County of Middlesex; the Candidates were Mr Alderman Brocas, and the above Mr. Alderman Thompson; the latter was declared to have the Majority in the Hall, but a Poll was demanded for the former, and was to begin the first of April.

The Reverend Mr. Beft, one of the Fellows of Baliol College in Oxford is chofen Mafter of that College, in the Room of the late Dr. Hunt.

PROMOTION S.

HE Right Honourable the Lord Trevor, Baron of Brombam, has been appointed Lord-Keeper of the Privy-Seal in the room of the late Duke of Kington; to which end he has been fworn in one of his Majesty's moft Ho nourable Privy-Council, and has taken his Place at the Board accordingly.

Alexander Abercromby of Glassaugh, Efq; Reprefentative of the Shire of Bamf, is appointed Lieutenant Governor of Port William in the room of Col. Guess, who fucceeds Sir Patrick Strahan as Barrack-Mafter-General in North Britain. Col. Gordon is appointed Governor of Penfilvania.

Devereux Bacon, Efq; Brother to Sir Edmund Bacon, is made Naval Officer and Collector of the Cuftoms in New Hampshire in America, in the room of the late Buts Bacon, Efq;

Brig. Sutton is appointed his Majefty's Envoy to the King of Pruffia, in the room of Col. Du Bourgay, who is recall'd on account of his ill State of Health. Durell, Efq; is appointed Advocate General of the Island of Fersey. John Arnott, Efq; is made Adjutant-General in North Britain.

William Lloyd, Efq; late Captain in Col. Montague's Regiment of Foot, and Leonard Gwyn, Efq;late Captain of a Company of Invalids,have exchang'd their Companies.

Fobn Bernard, Efq; is made Adjutant to the Royal Regiment of Waljh-Fufileers commanded by Major General Sabine.

William Strachey, Éfq; ís made Adjutant to Col. Harrison's Regiment of Foot.
