"The expences of the journey will be much increased by "the feason of the year, which will caufe us to travayle by "land, almost 400 miles more than if we had gone in fummer, and confequently to provide and carry with us more people and horses.

"The expences of the land journey will be very great, "and all provifions, both for men and horses, in the way "and att Stockholme, att a farre dearer rate in the winter "time, when they have no marketts, than they would have "bin in the fummer, when they might have bin had, att "the best rates; befides the charge of the fuell, which will "not be fmalle in that country.

"I may have (if you please) the coaches and liveryes pro"vided; befides which, I must provide clothes for myfelfe, "advance monies and falaries for many that are to goe with

The prefident, upon receit of this letter, told the meffenger he would communicate it to the councells committee, from whom, in a fhort time, Whitelocke fhould receive an

A principall care of Whitelocke, as to those of his retinue, was to gett able and fitt chapleins, fuch as were of a pious Sept. 21. life and conversation, and of good abilities and learning, for example and inftruction of his company and he defired to have them of a respectfull, civill, and courteous behaviour to win uppon his people, and to credit him among ftrangers; and that they might be qualifyed with languages, especially latin, as most usefull abroad, and most expected from their profeffion.

Being informed of Mr. Ingelo to be a fitt perfon for one of his chapleins, and that had he ingaged to attend the lord viscount L'Ifle, if he had gone; Whitelocke wrote to him to this purpose:

Sept. 21.

This letter Whitelocke tooke order to be fent by a fitt 1653meffenger to Mr. Ingelo, and to have fome friends of beft esteem with him, to discourse with him about, and to be furnished with reafons to perfuade him to goe this journey with Whitelocke, who defired his company.

According to the appointment of the committee, White- 22. locke was at Whitehall, where Mr. Lawrence told him, that the report of his propofalls was not yett made to the councell; divers of them being abfent at the committee for tithes, which was then in hott purfuite, fome for the taking of them away, and others for the continuence of them: the president appointed the next morning to meet at the committee, but afterwards fent a civil letter to Whitelocke to excuse it; fome of the councell still attending the buifnes of tithes.

By advice of Sir Oliver Fleming, mafter of the cere- 23. monies, that it was according to the custome of the ambaffadors; Whitelocke fent two of his fervants, who spake High Dutch, to Mr. Lagerfeldt, an agent, now refiding heer from the queen of Sweden, and to Mr. Bonele, then commiffioner heer for trade, with this meffage: "that the parlement having appointed him to goe ambaffador to her most ferene majesty the queen of Sweden, he thought fitt, in refpect to her majesty, and to them her publique ministers now refiding in England, to give them notice hereof."

Both the gentlemen desired their thankes might be return ed to the ambaffador, for his civility and respect to the queen their mistris, and to themselves; whereof they would give a speedy account to her majesty. Whitelocke fent his complement on this day, being the poft day, to give them opportunity of writing it into Sweden; which they did this day.

Uppon a report from their committee, the councell made two orders, both to the fame effect; whether through Sept. 24 incurioufnes of the councell, or their clerks, Whitelocke did not inquire; both were fent to him, the later order was this:

Att the councell of ftate att Whitehall. Ordered, "That "the lord commiffioner Whitelocke fhall have the fame "allowance for his ambaffy into Sweden as the lord vis"count L'Ifle was to have had; that is to fay, 6000 l. for "the firft fix months, wherof 3000 l. is to be paid in pre"fent money, to fuch perfons as his lordship shall appoint to receive the fame; and 3000l. more, by bills of exchange; the provifions of coach, harness, and liveryes being caft in over and above the forementioned "allowance of 6000l. and valued att 1000l. in confide"ration of his lordship's undertaking the journey in the "winter feafon. And the councell doth further declare, "that if there fhall be occafion for his lordship's stay in "Sweden longer then fix months, that there shall be duely "allowed and paid to his lordship, the fome of 600l. per "menf. which is the fame allowance that was to have "bin made to the lord vifcount L'Ifle,. if he had stayed in "Sweden, longer than fix months.

"That fuch plate, table-linnen, hangings, houfhold"ftuffe, and bedding, as are in the ftate's warderobe, "and which are fitt for the lord commiffioner Whitelocke's "use in his ambaffy into Sweden, be furnished unto his
