PREFACE.

THESE discourses, preached by the Author in the ordinary course of his ministry, in the early part of the present year, are now given to the public as they were delivered. The subjects to which they relate are of admitted importance. Correct views of Inspiration lie very largely at the foundation of all safe and sound theology. Where loose notions begin to be entertained on this subject, they will soon encourage a reckless mode of dealing with holy scripture, before which not even the things most surely believed amongst Christians will long continue safe. The past history of theological literature furnishes abundant evidence of this. Present appearances would seem to indicate that this question is likely to come up for renewed examination; and it seems necessary that more attention should be given to it in the ordinary ministrations of the pulpit than has been customary.

The object which the author had in view, in the composition of these discourses, was to furnish the
