PREFACE.

THE

HE plan of our half-yearly Preface is now fo fully known, and, we may add, fo generally approved, that we fhall wave the cere mony of introduction or apology. Our readers will find, in the prefent account, that even the extraordinary circumstances of the times, unfavourable, from various confpiring caufes, to literary efforts, have not been able to reprefs the ardour of Our countrymen; and that many works have claimed our notice, in almost all the paths of learning, to which the foftering air of general tranquillity was not wanting, to complete their growth or excellence. Zealous to promote these useful labours, we now recall them into view, and briefly recapitulate the praife, for which we have before affigned the reafons.

DIVINITY.

If we are to begin with that which is most important in the publications belonging to this clafs, the claim of Dr. Macknight's Tranflation of the Apoftolic Epifles to be mentioned first will not admit of a doubt. This laborious work, accompanied by every fpecies of illuftration which the contents can be fuppofed to require, will afford an admirable exercise for the ftudent, and a weighty object of confideration for the practifed fcholar in theology.
